Good morning Derek,
I keep forgetting just how lucky we are in the UK with the release of data
when compared to say the USA and AU. If only ? ?
Not too bothered about Graces sister, Lucy Dora (unless she married a
Catley ?!) and methinks the one married in 1947 in S.Wales is
probably she born 1920 who's mother was a nee Morgan.
Instead, have been pondering on Grace's husband William Catley and
wondering if he was born in AU or also a UK immigration import. Did
she maybe know him from the UK or was it a chance encounter whilst
working for a shoe manufacturer in Melbourne?
I think it was a chance encounter rather than anything planned in the UK
prior to Graces emigration and for the following reasons :-
W.Catley age 24 a clicker by trade, sailed ex Port of London for Hobart
09/05/1912....intended permanant residence = Victoria.
A scan of my bmd spreadsheet turns up William Catley b 4/4 1887
Keynsham (Bitton) with the note that in 1911 he was enumerated as a
boot finisher staying with his maternal uncle Levi Hayman a bootmaker
in Oldland, Somerset. My notes for this person also indicate that he was
a member of the Emery Catley (1731) of MidsomerNorton family tree
and the sub branch that includes the boxing celeb:- Glenn Catley.
A further note that I have for this person (William) is that he died at
Box Hill, Victoria in 1967 !
QED ? I think so but maybe Glynis B would like to do a double
check as our Emery Catley of MSN Lister ?
Tim

Hi Tim,
Unfortunately Australia is paranoid about these things & all states limit
historical searches to about 100 years, in this case Victoria's limit is
1912, so you have to supply relationship proof before you can view 1913
onwards births.
There are no records for Lucy D on FreeBMD except a marriage in Wales
1947,
nor any for plain old Lucy that look like they fit, in fact I can find
nothing at all anywhere.
Interestingly a William M Noble (her father?) died in Manchester 1925, he
was the right age.
The 1891 census shows several of the family in the shoe trade, being
Northamptonshire I suppose that is to be expected, but mother Sarah was
the
"Propieter of Celebrated Cure-all Ointment", so there.
Regards
Derek

Subject: [CATLEY] Grace Winifred Noble
Thank's Derek/Mick,
For the info.
So, Grace Winifred and her sister Lucy Dora are shoe machinists (1911
census) aged 22 and 19 and living at home with parents in Wellingborough
but
they emigrate to Victoria by taking passage ex Tilbury to Melbourne on the
SS Port Lincoln sailing 02/08/1912.
Grace marries William Catley in Victoria in 1915 who she presumably met at
work, seeing as he was a shoe clicker and seemingly a daughter, Thelma,
was
born abt 1916.
In 1920 Grace and four year old Thelma return to the UK for a year long
visit part of which was spent in Manchester.
1) Can we identify where William was born, UK or OZ ?
2) Can we find the birth info for Thelma and confirm if there were any
siblings ?
3) What happened to Lucy Dora ?
4) Does Williams probate in 1967 answer any questions?
Regards
Tim
