My thank's to David and Liz for trying to assist me in identifying the two Catleys
shown as born in Germany in 1950 in the Army Returns.
This turned out to be a dead end because in these instances the mothers maiden name is not
shown and the trail thus runs dead.
However, I turned to Facebook with which I have had a lot of success in making contact
with Catley's who are not genealagy minded, despite this research method being
poo-poo'd by many.
By examining what little information I had, I could project possible/probable children of
my two targets who would be in their early 30's and highly likely to be on F/B.
Result? A hit at the first attempt and a happy response from Helen followed the next day
with contact from her father Peter one of my target people. The reason for no information
forthcoming from the Army Returns for Germany is now clear, one of a non fraternisation
policy between the army of occupation and German nationals which prevented marriages until
1950.
All now sorted and these people I now know are members of the James Catley of Hull family
tree. Good old F/B, it has its uses!

Subject: British army births in Germany
Good morning everybody,
Can anybody give me some advice or assistance about turning up information about birth
details of Catley's born to army personnel in Germany in 1950 please? Both parties
returned to UK when father's posted back ex presumably British Army of the Rhine and
both have since married and have children.
The very least I am looking for is the mothers maiden name, that should mean I can at
least allocate them to their rightful family tree.
Regards
Tim Cattley
