Hello Lynda,
Yes we know a bit about Marks Birmingham Catley roots and the fact that some
of his forefathers were Gunsmiths in Steelhouse Lane.
He may also be amused to hear that one of his female ancestors was a leach
breeder!?
As I think you already know, Liz C assisted by various others incl self (or
in my case Liz ,is it hindrance?!) has done studies on a number of Cat*ley
Trees:-
2 in Yorkshire
1 in Notts
1 in Birmingham
and now of course is well into the Herts/Cambs/Essex Cat*leys.
From the researches into the Birmingham one, we have contact details
for two
current descendants so if Mark wishes to extend feelers in that direction,
either Liz or self can provide the necessary information for him
Tim

Hi everyone! I've been pretty quiet but two things have happend
to me
quite
recently.
I contacted the relevant government office because I established I am in a
council tax band that no one in my neighbourhood is and our homes are
rather
similar (the band I'm in being the more expensive one obviously).
I had a
response from the Chief Valuer - Mark Catley so.........as you do I asked
him to
look into my situation and left a ps saying about our Catley page and
that
I
was a Melbourn Catley.......had correspondance too-ing anf fro-ing
after
that
from other valuers (this began last September) and not a very
satisfactory
outcome either! anyway on 2nd January I received a very pleasant
phone
call
from Mark Catley regarding my ps. It appears he is a West Midlands
Catley
whose family made guns in the wars in the last century.....I'm
not aware
of those
Catley's however, sent him all the details of our catley
rootsweb and
emailed links to him which he is going to browse. Anyone aware of the
West
Midlands and Worcster Catley's?
Secondly, you may remember that I had been looking for Henry Arthur Catley
(Harry) in Australia and Mick Catley found his offspring and some
extremely sad
history but....I am in touch with my distant cousins. When I first
began
my tree because Harry was such a mystery to me and my father and his
family I
put requests on message boards on
Ancestry.com (about 4 years ago)
and
yesterday!!!! I received an email via
Ancestry.com from a Leuit in the
Australian
Navy saying she had a medal and army service records belonging to
Henry
Arthur
Catley which her gt grandfather had in safekeeping for Henry in
circa
1930
but her gt grandfather never saw him again.....She has been trying to
find the
right Catley's to return these items to however, Harry's
trail goes cold
in
1940 when he joined up again in the Australian army with a next of
kin
not
his wife or common law wife or children!! I'm sure that as this
tale
unfolds I
will establish when where and how he died and where he is buried.
Sadly
one
of Harry's illegitimate children to his Australian common law
wife was
fostered and endured the most awful childhood and then after joining up in
the
WW2
barely survived Changi Prison. I have found that Harry's
legitimate son
married from the home that Harry left when he returned to Australia, in
1949 so I
am now persuing any children from that part of my tree.
Just thought I would update you on other interesting matters that happen
as
a result of our site!
Thanks everyone! Lynda nee Catley
