For anyone interested in the "technicalities" of 20th Cent warfare, there is an
interesting read to be found in NZETC.htm which is part of the Official History of the NZ
Forces in WW2.
The sub section:- The Alamein Offensive_Files ..... reports on the activities of the
2nd NZ Division who with the 1st and 10th Armoured Div's, made up 10 Corps which saw
action in the North African Desert in 1942 in the turning point for the Allies which was
the El Alamein Campaign.
Lt T.R.Catley (later Captain Catley) was a member of the 2nd Div signals section and his
actions are to be found on pages 331-335 which involve skirmishes with German troops,
being wounded, getting captured, being straffed by allied aircraft and escaping again; all
exciting stuff.
GRO consultation suggests this is Thomas.R.Catley b Islington, London, March 21st 1911 who
was out in Durban, South Africa when he joined the NZ Forces.
I have not looked further but this is a nice chunk of 20th Cent military activity which
would look good on the appropriate Catley Tree if not already searched out?
