Hi All
It has been my experience that there are absolutely no definitive
records anywhere because humans are always involved and their
handwriting is often open to misinterpretation, especially by people
in a hurry.
Records going to the GRO had some odd ones missing, so as Anthony
points out it is always worth cross-checking at individual record
sources, and unless you see it yourself, check again.
I asked Ramsgate Record Office for a copy of the marriage of HG Hills
and Isabel Harriet Cattley and they got that wildly wrong as they
couldn't read the writing and had no idea what it should be.
Likewise I could not find John HILLs in Holdens's 1911
directory, until I looked under HELLS. Mike writes his name so
that it looks like that too. Can't blame the publishers.
So all I can say is no records, anywhere, are flawless. Keep a
(metaphorical) supply of salt on hand, so you can add those pinches
from time to time.
Cheers.... Erica
