Tim and Sharon,
I will also keep an eye open for your Cadley's. Tim did you know that I had
found info on Arthur John when I was up at the British Lib.

Hello Tim and Nigel
I was interested to read this information, and have a favour to ask! When
you're looking through the archives, could you also keep an eye out for any
Cadley's please Nigel? This is how my Wiltshire branch changed the surname!
Thanks,
Sharon

Subject: [CATLEY] Cat*leys in India
Hello Nigel,
Ref our conversation at the Oxford Cat*ley gathering concerning Cattleys in
India as well as Catleys:-
Thank you for volunteering to have a look-see for me.
Herewith the information you need to identify the two members of my Tree who
saw military service in India and died out there.
Arthur John Cattley 1821-1850
Henry Chad Cattley 1834-1865.
They were infact 2nd cousins, Arthur's grandfather being Robert Cattley of
Lime Street, City of London and Henry's being Stephen Cattley of Camberwell,
London and it is highly likely that they knew oneanother.
As far as I know, they were accepted by The Honourable East India Company in
UK as Officer Cadets and then posted to India as one would suppose. What
sort of training they got here in the UK (if any) I know not as I have not
researched the workings of the H.E.I.C. from the methods of recruitment of
either Army or Navy.
The only other thing we know is that Henry married in India to one
Fanny.E.D.Toke but when and where is unknown.
Thus we know nothing of their service within the H.I.E.C. Which Regiments?
Where served? What Officer status? How died?
So: if in your travels around the National Archives looking at Catley India
Military information, you happen to stumble across these two Cattleys, self
and Erica + Joan would be most interested to learn of anything you happen to
unearth.
The only clues I can give you is that the HEIC Cadet Papers come under the
ref:- IOR/L/MIL/9
To that effect:
There would appear to be the following leads:-
Arthur John:............. IOR/L/MIL/9/190/502-05
Henry Chad:............. IOR/L/MIL/9/225/330-40
Henry Chad is supposed to "have died on active service" which could mean
anything!
Please do not devote any more time to this than you feel reasonable as when
I change this pc and go broadband (soon now hopefully!) I should be able to
be a bit more self supportive in the research department and not rely on
good natureship of other Listers! ......... Liz please note!!!
Best wishes
Tim
