Hi Tim-
I had forgotten you were a double T Cattley, so unlike Liz, I would not have
made notes on either of your candidates. I will however follow up next time
I go to the British Library, although that may not be for a few weeks. The
IOR references you give are the India Office Records kept at the BL, so
there should be something there.
In the meantime however, looking at what is available online
Henry Chadd Cattley-
Fibis and Family Search both have record of his marriage to Fanny Ellen
Duff Toke on 1 Sept 1863 at Mussoorie, West Bengal, India- the microfiche
ref is N1/105/81
Fibis record from the 'war service records of officers in the Bengal Army'-
a Lieutenant HC Cattley -late 62nd Native Infantry. Promotions:-
Ensign 20 mar 1851; Lieut. 23 Nov 1856. The word 'late' probably means he
had left that regiment at the time the list was compiled (1863?)
British Lib. Search reveals record of Death of Henry Chad Cattley on 24 Oct
1865 at Mian Mir . Status Maj, BenSC. - no I don't know what this means
either but will follow up on BL visit! Mian Mur appears to be in Lahore.
If Henry was in the East India Company's Bengal army stationed in that part
of Bengal in the late 1850's his luck was out as this was where the Indian
Mutiny (1857-58) was at its worst. However it appears he survived until
1865, by which time the East India Company Armies had been taken over by the
Crown.
Arthur John Cattley
British Lib - refer to a Biography (or more likely a biographical article
or note) for Arthur John Cattley under the reference l/AG/23/10/1-2 and
refer to him being in the Madras Army and born 20 May 1821
Fibis record the Madras Almanacs's shipping Arrivals and Departures at
Madras and note the following under AJ Cattley:-
i) 23 Jul 1843 - Departure for London via The Cape of
Lieut AJ Cattley, 1st European Regt. Fusiliers aboard the ship London
captained by JT Atwood.
ii) 19 Aug 1846 - Arrival from Portsmouth (departure 10
May) of Lieut AJ Cattley 1st Madras Fusiliers aboard the ship Robert
Small, captain T Scott
Other
Fibis also mentioned the following two marriages reported in the periodical
Gentleman's magazine, which may or may not be relevant:-
27 Dec 1847 , Madras - Francis John Moberly esq (of the Madras Engineers) to
Francis-Lydia Cattley only daughter of the late Robert James Cattley of
Wandsworth
18 Sept 1843 - Leyton (in the UK) William Wildman Kettlewell esq of
Calcutta to Ellen, eldest daughter of Stephen Wildman Cattley esq of Leyton.
At least that's what transcription says , I doubt the coincidence of the
two 'Wildmans' .
In any event, I looked up marriage on UK BMDs and found it Q3 1843, Sub
Dist West Ham, Vol 12, Page 423.
I hope this helps, and will let you know if I pick up any more at next BL
visit
Regards
Nigel

Subject: [CATLEY] Cat*leys in India
Hello Nigel,
Ref our conversation at the Oxford Cat*ley gathering concerning Cattleys
in India as well as Catleys:-
Thank you for volunteering to have a look-see for me.
Herewith the information you need to identify the two members of my Tree
who saw military service in India and died out there.
Arthur John Cattley 1821-1850
Henry Chad Cattley 1834-1865.
They were infact 2nd cousins, Arthur's grandfather being Robert Cattley of
Lime Street, City of London and Henry's being Stephen Cattley of
Camberwell, London and it is highly likely that they knew oneanother.
As far as I know, they were accepted by The Honourable East India Company
in UK as Officer Cadets and then posted to India as one would suppose.
What sort of training they got here in the UK (if any) I know not as I
have not researched the workings of the H.E.I.C. from the methods of
recruitment of either Army or Navy.
The only other thing we know is that Henry married in India to one
Fanny.E.D.Toke but when and where is unknown.
Thus we know nothing of their service within the H.I.E.C. Which
Regiments? Where served? What Officer status? How died?
So: if in your travels around the National Archives looking at Catley
India Military information, you happen to stumble across these two
Cattleys, self and Erica + Joan would be most interested to learn of
anything you happen to unearth.
The only clues I can give you is that the HEIC Cadet Papers come under the
ref:- IOR/L/MIL/9
To that effect:
There would appear to be the following leads:-
Arthur John:............. IOR/L/MIL/9/190/502-05
Henry Chad:............. IOR/L/MIL/9/225/330-40
Henry Chad is supposed to "have died on active service" which could mean
anything!
Please do not devote any more time to this than you feel reasonable as
when I change this pc and go broadband (soon now hopefully!) I should be
able to be a bit more self supportive in the research department and not
rely on good natureship of other Listers! ......... Liz please note!!!
Best wishes
Tim
