Hi Elaine,
It is a problem for yourself and other Anstey Cat*ley Tree researchers,
because it appears that this clan in particular, could not seem to
"standardise" on either the Catley or Cattley spelling and thus the name
bounces about from generation to generation and almost inevitably lands up
with 1st cousins marrying, in this case it was a male Catley marrying a
female Cattley.
Liz and self have been attempting to use the GRO lists of b/m/d's for both
Catley and Cattley and annotating positive identifications from individual
Tree researches in an effort to rationalise things and bring about a
semblance of order.
The Cattley lists are almost complete now but we still have a long way to go
to grasp all the Catley entries.
Trouble is, that not all researchers are willing to "make things public"and
thus neither of us can identify Catleys on the GRO Lists where people decide
to keep their research results private.
This was one of the issues that was discussed at the Cat*ley gathering at
Oxford but without any conclusion as people are quite within their rights to
guard their results but it does hamper general researchers such as Liz and
self.
Regards
Tim

Hi Tim
Thanks for that, I was interested to which tree he belonged to.

The Cattley post cards crop up on e-bay quite frequently but more often

not, the artist is incorrectly identified by use of the wrong

P.R.Cattley.
The person concerned was Alexander Robert Cattley (1885-1955) who was an
illustrative artist for the News Chronicle newspaper.
As an aside to his regular employment, he did a series of 1914-1918
"military humour" post cards and it is an example of one of these that
Elaine refers to.
Alexander was also an authority on British Military Uniforms and from time
to time other examples of his art crop up in the form of card sets of
illustrations of militia during the American War of Independence.
None of his work will mean much to any of you unless, like Alexander
Robert
Cattley, you happen to be a member of the Stevan Catlay of Normanton
(Yorkshire) Tree.

Tim Cattley.
