Hi Tim
This Charles is also commemorated at Fulford War Mem. which indicates he
came from Yorkshire.

Subject: [CATLEY] Charles Catley
Hello all,
You may recall my email to ' The List ' concerning Charles Catley who was
killed in action on board H.M.S.Queen Mary (Battlecruiser) at the Battle
of Jutland in 1916?
My searches indicated that Charles, who was in The Royal Marine Artillery,
was The Royal Marine Gunner on the Queen Mary and as such, the Officer who
was directly responsible for the overall control and efficiency of the
considerable firepower that capital ships had in those days.
Whatsmore, HMS Queen Mary was the proud winner of the Royal Navy (home
fleet) gunnery exercises and acknowledged champion of target practice and
"best ship in the Fleet" and much of this accolade must surely be down to
Charles?
However, The Commonwealth War Graves Commission have him just listed as
Gunner, Royal Marine Artillery which in royal marine military terms, is
equivalent to calling him a private!
Having queried this anomoly with the CWGC, they respond with the stock
reply that a change to their records and an alteration to the Portsmouth
Naval Memorial at Southsea can only be done if I can prove Charles' status
by provision of a copy of his Record of Service, should it have survived
that is, following the damage to archives due to German bombing of the
East End warehouse where they were stored during WW2.
Charles is not of my Tree........... indeed no Lister has claimed him yet
but I feel that he should be recorded with his correct rank and title.
I am not adept at ferreting for Records of Service on line, with The
National Archives and thus ask if some kind person who feels the same way
will take up this task please?
You may recall that we had similar troubles with the CWGC where one WW1
Anstey Catley Tree member had not been commemorated at all and his
brothers name incorrectly spelt yet in a combined operation
(Sharon,Anthony and self) we got the matter resolved.
Anybody help please?
Tim
