Hi Liz,
Years ago when I did a global search for CAT*LEY on the IGI I found
that the soundex code for CATLEY was the same as for CATLOW. There
were a goodly number of CATLOWs, particularly in North West England.
The Mormon soundex theory is based on the fact that clerks wrote down
(phonetically) what they heard, so local accents played a significant
part in how names were spelt. Whether these CATLOW families were
originally CATLEYs is obviously a moot point, or a DNA challenge,
whichever way you want to look at it :-) .
As the bearer of a name that is occurs in two totally unrelated
forms, any global search for HILLS gives me a 90% return of HILL,
which is very annoying as there are more than enough HILLS to search
through as it is. However, I have to work quite hard to get our
name correctly written down, and I speak reasonably clearly, so I
don't see any reason why it shouldn't have been written wrongly in the past.
Cheers ... Erica

Hi Dave and all,
Found this one interesting. It appears Ellen Catley/Catlow died giving birth
to son Edmund. Question is, is she a Catley or Catlow. I've never come
across that mix before.
