Oops, I thought I had sent this :-[ Graeme!!
Hello Nigel,
I'm fine thank you, with summer over and beautiful autumn days
abounding - if we just had some more rain!
Thank you for your information on the Lawrence School. I do have some
of it from you already, but thought I would post on India-L to see
what I could find out from there. I was advised that the only thing
that survived that includes the 1860s is the Admission Record, but no
Catleys are included in it for the period 1854 to 1880 - probably
because they refer to the admission as boarders and the Catley
children would have lived with Leonard and Charlotte so not included
there? This would not have been the case in 1904 onwards when your
grandmother and her sister attended Lawrence School.
I don't know if any of the Somerset researchers have captured copies
of Laura and Albert's birth records but I will do that anyway this
week and make all the information available to the group.
Regards
Graeme

Hi Graeme - how are you keeping
Lawrence School (as the Lawrence Asylum is now known) is very much alive
and kicking - its a renowned public school with strong military connections
and many generals , admirals etc amongst its alumnae. Here are a couple of
websites that may help you
http://www.lovedale.org/ith
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_School,_Lovedale
I was particularly interested in the school , not only because of the
Leonard Catley connection ( after leaving the army he joined the school as
sergeant in 1861 and progressed through sergeant major and quartermaster
sergeant to Dr Mr Sergeant (whatever that is!) He retired as a Queens
Pensioner in 1866/7), but also because my grandmother May Catley and her
sister Ada (Leonard/ Charlotte's grandaughters) attended the school from c
1904. I wondered whether the two were connected
There are registers of the pupils at the school ( I have a copy of the
extract for May Catley)- and I was able to get some other (limited)
information through the alumnae forum Oldlaws -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oldlaws/. They made me a member and I still
get the forum mail !
There are supposed to be staff records in the British Library but I dont
think I found anything of interest when I looked, but will check again next
time I am there.
We are away at the house in France at the moment and my files are back home
in the UK - but when I returc I will have a look to see whether I have
anything that may be of interest.
I can't recall offhand what data I have already given you, but the following
is from my FTM database on Leonard
"Leonards Army Discharge Papers dated 30th July 1861 show No 3739 Private
Leonard Catley, by trade a labourer was born in the parish of Philips
Norton* near Bath in the county of Somerset and was attested for the Fourth
Regiment of Foot at Bristol on 23 October 1839 at age of 18 11/12 years [ie
born Sept 1820]. Up to his discharge he had served 21 years/ 101 days in the
army of which 20years/183 days were in the 'East Indies'. His discharge was
medical- unfit for further service.Of his conduct it notes - his conduct has
been very good and he has four good conduct badges. He has never been court
marshalled or entered in the regimental defaulter's book. His pay records
show that he was with the 4th Foot between 23 October 1839 and 31 October
1847, transferring to 25th Foot (Kings own Borderers) on 1 Nov 1847 and
again to 74th Foot (Highlanders) on 1 March 1855. He was a Private
throughout,
* Philips Norton or Norton St. Philip as it is now called is about 7 or 8
miles from Midsomer Norton.
His physical description at discharge is Age 40 10/12 yrs, Height 5ft 5in ,
Complexion -fresh, eyes grey, hair brown, trade labourer, no marks or scars.
Intended place of residence - Ootacamund. The medical report advises ..."
The nature of the disability loss of free motion of the left arm the
consequence of his accident off duty. This has not been aggravated by **
for**." (**= unreadable) On leavind the Army Leonard worked briefly for the
Madras Public Works Dep, but more follows thenjoined the staff of Lawrence
Asylum. He joined as Sergeant in 1861 and progressed through Sergeant Major
and Quartermaster Sergeant to Dr Mr Sergeant. He retired as a Queens
Pensioner c 1866/7.
Lawrence Asylum later became the celebrated Lawrence School - attended some
40 years later by Leonard's grand daughters May and Ada Catley"
