When I received information on my wife's Catley family (from the
Midsomer Catley tree) I noticed that the birth/christening places for
Albert Walter, Edwin Henry and William Catley children of Leonard
Catley and Charlotte Bunyan was Jackatella, India.
This was a new place for me so I went looking for it in my usual
online Imperial Gazetteer of India and couldn't find it. So I asked
on the india-l list and found out it was in the Nilgiris and was the
original name for what is now Wellington. The interesting thing is we
went through Wellington on the train coming down from Ooty a couple
of years ago and didn't know of the family connection at the time.
The following was also just posted on the india-l list and I thought
some of you might be interested in this downloadable document (Book
page 80 or PDF page 144 mentions Jackatalla).
A recent e-mail requesting information about the roads in the
Nilgiris, served as a reminder of the Internet Archives PDF (40MB)
of the "The Nilgiri Guide and Directory (1916).
http://www.archive.org/details/nilgiriguideandd031416mbp
The directory of persons in various locations is towards the back
of the book. This section includes the names of the plantations,
their size and manager's name. This portion would be of interest to
someone looking for the residence of a relative.
The roads/villages mentioned in an e-mail from Nick Balmer are
mentioned in the Chapter regarding the local tribes of the region.
Other chapter topics include trails for trekking or biking; hunting;
places to stay. There are chapters about the main places - Ooty, Coonoor, etc.
If you have an interest in The Nilgiris, this is a must browse
- plenty of photographs, advertisements to view!
I hope information about places our ancestors lived in is not too
off-topic for this list.
