Hi Tim et al,
Right - certificate in hand! Very sad! 13th March 1849, Henry
Griffin CATTLEY male, aged 3 months, Son of Henry Griffin CATTLEY
(Independent). Cause of death: Acute Hydrocephalus 2 days Certified.
Present at death Maryan Hill, Providence Cottages, Camden
Town. (Reg. dist. Saint Pancras, Middlesex).
From :
http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/hydrocephalus
"There are two main varieties of hydrocephalus: congenital and
acquired. An obstruction of the cerebral aqueduct (aqueductal
stenosis) is the most frequent cause of congenital hydrocephalus.
Acquired hydrocephalus may result from spina bifida, intraventricular
hemorrhage, meningitis, head trauma, tumors, and cysts."
Used to be called "water on the brain" when I was young. I guess
maybe something could be done about it in many cases today, depending
on the cause.
This Henry did not marry Maryanne Stephenson as I said in my last
email. Question now is who did he marry? I can't find him the St.
P. Marriages nor on a quick search on Ancestry. It's probably there
just mistranscribed, but I don't have time to find it tonight and the
rest of this week looks pretty full on. Anyone else got him anywhere?
As ever ... Erica
Hi again,
I can't find any evidence of the second Henry Griffin. The thing is
the 1841 census is sus at best, but he very well may have been much
older and not living in England at that time. We have no evidence he
might have been born between 1841 and 1849 (the Henry we know of who
married Maryanne Stephenson had no children, though we can't rule
out stillbirth); if I do find evidence I still won't know who his
parents were from the indexes alone. So I have ordered the death
certificate which should give us the facts. Get back to you in a week or so.
As ever ... Erica

Erica et all,
There is only one Henry Griffin Cattley that I know about and he was
a member of the Stevan Catlay of Normanton tree, the youngest son of
William Cattley of Barnet (of Cattleya orchid fame) who was b 1821
either Barnet or London and d 1897 Kensington.
