Hi Bernie,
This has just come back to me about the newspaper articles. As you already know what
Thomas was accused of I don't think it is worth paying out for a copy of the article.
I am going to contact the Somerset record office to see if they can supply me with the
jail records.
I will keep you posted.

Subject: Thomas Catley newspaper report Ref:213/09
Dear Ms Cordingley,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the conviction of Thomas Catley.
I have managed to locate the newspaper report covering the Bath Quarter Sessions in
October 1837. There is a 3 line report of the conviction of Thomas for stealing some
trousers from Mr Turner of Bath Street, and his sentence to 10 years transportation.
There are no further details about where he was living or his family at the time - these
reports were generally just a list of the results of the cases with no further details
about the accused or the rest of the case. You may have already found the Quarter
Sessions records in the Bath Record Office. The Somerset Record Office also holds the
records for the county gaol, where Thomas would probably have been held before he was
shipped out on the Bengal Merchant in March 1838.
We can provide you with a digital copy of the 'report' above - either as a jpg
attachment or as a printed A4 sheet - for £6 (£1 for the image, £5 admin costs). Payment
is by cheque, made payable to "Bath & North East Somerset Council" and sent
to myself at the address below, indicating what format you would like the image sent to
you in (via email or in print).
Sorry we couldn't help you further with the family history.
I look forward to hearing from you,

Hi,
Can you tell me if you have an artical for a conviction on the 26/10/1837 of Thomas Catley
aged 19 at the Quarter sessions Bath in the local paper.
Thomas was transported to NSW on 24/3/1838. All that is known about him is that his father
was also called Thomas. I have been in touch with your archives section and they have put
me onto you.
Thanks
Liz
