Hi there Bernie,
Unless I have missed something, have you considered if the Henry of
Cucklington, listed in Tim's Which Tree List and what I mapped, (which is
near Salisbury and ~ equidistant from Bath) might be related ie his
grandfather?

Hi Bernie,
Too many Thomas'........know what you mean; we had a situation about two
years ago on the James Catley of Barley tree of " too many Charles' " and
it
nearly drove Sharon, Liz & Elaine up the wall trying to identify the right
one.
One thing though; are you all correct in discounting the MSN Catley's and
only concentrating on the Barthwick connection?
Barthwick is obviously part of Bath and there is a good chance that Thomas
senior and Thomas junior came from there but MSN is not far away.
Maybe I have missed something but I note that there was a Thomas Catley of
MSN who m Hester Tovey there in 25/12/1816 and they had:-
1) William bapt MSN 31/8/17
2) Maria bapt MSN 12/1/23
Thus there is a nice gap for an undetected Thomas to have been born/bapt
around 1819.
Just a thought
Tim

Hi Bernie,
I also received a letter from Phil with the following info. I have sent an
email to the local studies library to find out if they have any records in
the Bath Chronicle. Will let you know the outcome.
Liz

Subject: [CATLEY] convicts sent from Bath
Dear Bernie,
Thankyou for your query. I have had a look at the quarter sessions minutes
for Bath (local criminal courts), and have found an entry for Thomas Catley
who was convicted on the 28th October 1837. The Bath quarter sessions record
that he was sentenced to be "Transported for 10 years". They also read
"Stealing/ after a former conviction/ one pair of trousers val[ue] 20s goods
of John Turner. 2nd C[?] without former conviction. 3rd C[?] property of
George Hurd." We are not sure that the "C[?]" represents, but it probably
represents "count" i.e. charges against him. Unfortunately, we do not have
quarter sessions before 1837. The 28th Oct 1837 is the only conviction on
our records, so any other convictions were probably 1836 or earlier.
I also searched indexes which we hold to baptisms in the parishes of Bath
Abbey (1801-1840), St James (1813-1840), St Michael (1813-1840) but could
find entries for the name Catleys.
We have a database of marriage in North Somerset (including Bath) from
1754-1837. Here are the listings for Thomas Catley:
CATLEY THOMAS 10.02.1755 MIDSOMER NORTON 2 3 11
CATLEY THOMAS 30.01.1804 BATHWICK 10 96 340
CATLEY THOMAS 31.08.1808 BATHWICK 11 48 142
CATLEY THOMAS 25.12.1816 MIDSOMER NORTON 6 17 51
Since you are discounting the Midsomer Norton Catleys (both of these are too
early anyway: if Thomas was transported in 1837 when he was 19, that gives
us an 1818 birthdate), here are details of the Bathwick Catleys:
30.01.1804 CATLEY THOMAS BACH OTP REBECCA PURNELL SPIN OTP B
31.08.1808 CATLEY THOMAS WID OTP JANE VIZER WID OTP B
Since the marriages are so close in date in the same parish, and since the
second is a widower when marrying in 1808, it could be that they are the
same person, and that Rebecca died between 1804 and 1808, and Thomas had
remarried. Although this Thomas Catley is too early to be your Thomas, it
could be an ancestor. I searched the index for the register of baptisms in
Bathwick parish 1813-1840 and could find no Catleys.
I can also search a wider area to cover baptism records of Batheaston,
Bathampton and outlying villages (remembering the Midsomer Norton Catley's
are no relation). However, this would take longer than the brief search I
conducted above, and so we would require a fee. We charge £24 an hour with a
minimum spend of £12 an hour. Unfortunately, we can only accept £ Sterling
by cash or cheque drawn from a UK bank.
I hope the information I have provided is useful. If you would like me to
carry out the further research outlined above, do let me know.
Kind Regards,
Philip Harper
