Hi Liz:
Spurred to fresh efforts I found a link with a picture of Thomas Catley's church. In
case it does not come through intact the page is Sarah, Countess of Waldegrave (she paid
for the church).

Hi Anthony
I had problems getting my head round St Clements. However it was definitely
called St Clements at Halton and Ore district. It was built on land that
belonged to the barracks. Thomas and 2 others purchased the land and I
assume built the church. I don't know if they built anything else on it. My
dad remembers going to school just round the corner from where it was sited.
It was demolished in 1970, it was considerable smaller than the main church
in Hastings town. Its a shame he wasn't interested in family history when he
was a lad!!! Thomas went on to work for the council in what we would call
the planning dept.

There is something about this entry that does not gel. St Clements is
a
church in Hastings readily found on the net. It is only 1 mile from the
church to Halton Heights (entry reads Halton not Hatton) and even if a
church was built there in 1838 it seems unlikely it, too, would be
dedicated to St Clement. I wonder if Thomas Catley rather was involved in
improvements to an existing church? If so it was not demolished in 1970.

For you Chris but no doubt Liz will be interested, as I think that this is
the Thomas Catley on her Lincolnshire Tree :-
