Liz: I have been looking at Thomas. He is variously described as: turner
and carver (1851 & same profession as father James Catley); ship carver
and wood turner, Queen's Dock, Hull (1857 Commercial Directory); wood
carver Hull (1861); not yet found 1871; sculptor in marble, wood and
stone Newington (1881); carrier [sic] in wood and stone Lambeth (1891);
not yet found 1901; sculptor 27 Lilford Road Camberwell (1902 Kelly's
London Southern Districts). There was of course a Thomas Catley surveyor
at Hastings who is very well documented but he lived much earlier. I
suppose we share the supposition that Bertram Sydney is such an unusual
name for the period that there is unlikely to be two of them? Anthony

Subject: [CATLEY] Thomas Henry and Bertram
Hi All,
I have attached a copy of the letter from Chris via genesreunited.
We have recently made some progress with Thomas Catley but have hit
another brick wall.
IFHF last week released Derry archives and we found birth records for
Thomas Henry Catley born 17/10/1895 to Bertram Sydney Catley and Frances
Ann McCoach. Bertam was in the Medical Staff Corps at Ebrington
Barracks. They were married in Derry 12/06/1894. Bertram's father was
down as Thomas an Architect and Frances' as Patrick a labourer.. They
had another son Horace Wentworth Catley born in Fulham England in 1898.
The 1901 records have them all living together back in Derry.
The story goes that the two boys were deposited at the Industrial school
in Dublin by their mother and we have found them there on the 1911
census. Then into the Dublin Fusiliers and we are fine. Horace's son is
still alive and we are planning a trip to Liverpool to see him.
Interestingly he is called Thomas.
The mother we can no longer trace, although through the Donegal website
we have found hers and her families earlier records.
Bertram apparently went to USA or Canada and we have found a Bertram
Sydney Catley going out of Liverpool to New Brunswick in Dec 1902. There
the trail goes cold. The passenger list has him aged 30. Yet the 1901
census has him aged 31, so might not be the same guy but very
coincidental.
Frances's birth record is down as Fanny for Frances.
Did try rootsweb but didn't have any luck. Probably me.
If this strikes any chords I would love to know more.
What strikes me as interesting is Thomas Henry's father, Thomas was an
Architect. Do we have any more info on this. Or have I missed it!!!!
Liz
