Hi Jocelyn,
The derivation of Cat*ley name spelling is a subject that crops up on a
fairly regular basis within this List and Sharons 'Cadleys' in Wiltshire is
a good example which just goes to show that we can not assume that even the
first three letters of the Surname were necessarily recorded correctly!
As for the FTDNA matches at 12 marker level: yes I too saw the
Catlin/Cady/Cantley names and whilst it is tempting to go off dna chasing, I
am not going to, because my feeling is that we have more than enough to do
in attempting to find connections in the Catley camp that dna says are there
already.
Was horrified to read the report on the Mt Erebus air crash.

Whoops pressed the wrong button.
Hi there Tim,
I am pleased you could make sense of my tree. Its fine that you didn't
include the distaffs. They are there for completeness. As you would have
noticed this line tends to be dominated by girls so without them there
would
be some big holes.
Will be very interesting if a few more lines can be joined up.
Over time I wonder how many names have deviated from the Cat*ley format. I
see that in the 100% 12 marker matches list I got which of course includes
your name, there are also two Catlins, a Cady and a Cantley. Have not
investigated any of these yet, but unfortunately the latter two don't have
email contacts.
The Mt Erebus crash was a black day in NZ history.

Hi Jocelyn (+ Anne)
Have just finished inputting your John Catley of Hackney 1803 data into
the
"Which Tree" Database.
Congratulations on such a well searched and presented Tree, it was a
pleasure to process. My only sorrow is that I could not use all the grand
distaff information you presented but you will understand that I must
stick
with the Catley theme on what is a Catley site?
That said: please do tell me the circumstances behind the two distaff
brothers who died on the same day near Scott Base Antarctica?
Scott Base is in NZ possession as far as I am aware, which explains their
presence and I assume they were part of a climbing party or some such team
which met with some accident or other?
As for matters dna............ have now entered your tree into the
database
with the same code as the Edmund of Bilton and the Stevan of Normanton
trees, as of course we have matching dna for all three.
I now have nearly 6000 Catley bmd events logged and my maths tells me that
"our dna" accounts for about 15% of the total for the period 1581-1900.
That is for just one Yorkshire based line.
So far, I think we have five different Catley dna groups running on test
but
the results from Bernie et al may push this figure up a notch or two. We
will see.
Cheers
Tim
