NOTES: Circular letter lithographed on one side with
hand-written text.
Begins with quotation "Great Exhibition of the Industry
of all Nations.". First paragraph indicates enclosure
of "a copy of the Resolutions passed at a large and
very influential meeting of the Merchants, Bankers,
Manufacturers and traders of the City of London, held
on the 17th of October" and requests that recipient
"inform us which of the members of your firm you would
wish to be reported to H. R. Highness, as being willing
to be named on the City Committee; and whether your
firm will consent to promote the proposal of His Royal
Highness.".
Accompanied by enclosure of printed resolutions in
relation to the Great Exhibition referred to in this
letter: "At a Meeting of the Merchants, Bankers,
Manufacturers, Traders, and others, held at the
Mansion-House of the City of London, on the 17th day of
October, 1849". Printed document details resolutions:
" ... That this Meeting tenders its best thanks to His
Royal Highness Prince Albert, President of the Society
of Arts, for his proposal to establish an Exhibition of
the Works of industry of All Nations in 1851, and
expresses its cordial readiness to co-operate with His
Royal Highness in carrying the same into effect ... ",
"... That this meeting is of opinion that the cost of
the proposed Exhibition should be provided by voluntary
subscriptions, and not by the general taxation of the
country ... " , "... That a general committee be formed
of the Merchants, Bankers, and Traders of the
metropolis, to promote the proposal of His Royal
Highness, to consist of the following gentlemen ...
With power to add to their number; and that the
Reverend Stephen Reed CATTLEY, and Mr. Under-Sheriff D.
W. Wire be the Honorary Secretaries of such Committee
..." and " ... That the above resolutions be duly
advertised in the London papers ... ", with printed
signatures of Stephen Reed CATTLEY and David Williams
Wire as Honorary Secretaries and addressed "9, St.
Swithin's Lane, Lombard Street." (1 folded sheet, 26
cm., letterpress printed on one side only).
