David: The Departure List has separate columns for English, Welsh, Scotch, Irish and
British Colonial and they are in the first. Within each category there are separate sets
of columns for 12 years and upward and between 1 and 12. Chas. is in the former, so
perhaps between 12 and 15? He is shown as a farmer. The wife has an initial in the
transcription but my reading of the original is a scrawled Mrs so this does not add to
your information. With regard to your original information have you ruled out Canada? Many
went to the States via Canada or vice versa. I have a relative who went to Canada just in
time for the 1911 census and have found him there (as I recall on a free data base).

Anthony,
You have found the bod's I am interested in - though the way findmypast
records them (I assume index wise), is a little worrying.
On Ancestry I was able to view an image of the Pakeha passenger list.
They are down as ..
Joseph Meredith, farmer, adult, British
Mrs. Meredith, wife, adult, British
Chas Meredith, child, (under 15 yrs), British
I am currently trawling various online Australian sources - alas no apparent
trace in the NSW State sources.
I just wonder if having landed in Sydney, whether Joseph might have been
subject of some form of immigration documentation control with regard to
personal details or perhaps where he intended staying etc. prior to leaving
the docks.
If only an exact age had been quoted for him on the passenger list!
David

You do not say if he was a Meredith but if so findmypast has a single
outgoing passenger list with a family matching your description who went
out to Sydney on the Pakeha. He is shown as a farmer. She has an initial.
The third person is not listed under children but as a single male and
also shown to be a farmer. They are specified to be English. Anthony

As the list is a bit quiet at the moment I hope you wont mind if I slip
this non Catley query in.
It's really addressed to our Australian listers for some local knowledge
concerning immigrants.
I'm trying to trace what happened to my great grandfather who on paper
went missing in 1906 after my great grandmother divorced him.
Suffice to say available UK records have drawn a blank - as have US
databases on Ancestry.
A relative is now telling us of a story in their family circle suggesting
he went to the States in 1911 - but, as outlined the US angle returned no
trace.
However, I have found a potential match for him, or I should say a man
bearing his full name is listed on the 'New South Wales, Australia,
Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists' for 1911.
The passenger list records he was an adult and British, that he was
accompanied by a 'wife' (only surname entered) and a son (full name
recorded).
I have the name of the ship and date of arrival in Sydney.
So here's my query - given this rather sparse information, is there likely
to be any further record I could seek out covering their 'immigration' in
1911 which might help me identify whether or not he was my great
grandfather?
