Hi Kay,
The Catley listers here on Rootsweb are a pretty close bunch and most share
their research results happily with the others, in a spirit of mutual
cooperation. I suppose this is heightened by the rarity of the Surname.
We are very lucky in the fact that we have a nucleus of first class Catley
researchers such as David who have and still are, putting in a great deal of
effort into not only their own immediate Cat*ley tree but also other
"unknowns" as well, in the hope that somewhere along the line, especially on
a regional basis, some can be joined together.
The Nottinghamshire Catleys as researched by David (which I call under the
title of :- William of Farndon b 1837-38) are an interesting bunch in that
they sit south and central to two main Lincolnshire trees and four Yorkshire
trees and we are curious as to where their roots lie.
In an effort to identify mutual roots, we have done some dna tests which
indicate that the currently known Lincolnshire trees have a dna match
together whilst we also have Yorkshire Cat*ley tree matches, yet the dna
shows that the Lincs and Yorks lines do not have any common ancestry.
So where does William and his Farndon//Newark tree come from? Lincs or
Yorks .........ideally we need a male tree volunteer from the Newark line to
test.
Regards
Tim

Hi Tim
Wow, the tree is great, you must have spent many hours working on it,
thank
you for letting me see it.
I've looked at the entries you've listed for my part of the line and they
all look correct to me. I didn't have the surname of William (born 1737/8)
CATLEY's wife; Ann SMITH. I'm not looking forwards to searching for her
ancestors, I've managed to avoid SMITH's in my tree up to now, but seeing
as
she would be my 5 x g-grandmother then I'll have to start :-)))
I hadn't linked William CATLEY [(born 1778/79) who married Mary SMITH] as
being the brother of Thomas CATLEY [(baptised 1784) who married Jane
ETCHES]. That was obviously the brick wall you managed to solve in order
to
link the Newark and Farndon branches. How did you realise they were
brothers?
I don't have access to census records at the moment so am unable to check
some of the details, I'm waiting to see how much the subscription to
Ancestry will cost when they release the 1911 census next year and will
then
subscribe. I will look at the records that are available online and will
get
back to you when I have more questions.
Thank you again, you've done a brilliant job.

Morning Kay,
We've certainly had contact in the past - afraid I lost heaps of stuff
with
a hard drive hiccup - anyway a copy of the Newark pedigree I've been
working
on is on it's way to you.
Will be looking at the points you raise in due course.
David
