Anthony,
If you simply search for :- Monuments and Dust and then select the Times
dated 26/01/1850, you should find the Mansion House meeting that Stephen
Reed attended and he is most certainly titled Rev. Maybe your point about
Clerk doubling up as a "clerk in holy orders" is right.
Rootsweb trees :- WIRE has over 200 pages, buckets of them in the USA......
Travers Barton Wire is included and both his marriages are shown :-
1) Cecelia Susan Cattley 02/06/1863 St John's, Clapham.
2) Constance Catherine Bidder 10/12/1889 Dartmouth.
The three Wire-Cattley children are shown :-
Cecil David 1864 Lewisham
Elsie Harriett 1866 Greenwich
Wilfred Travers 1868 Greenwich
Then there is the Wire-Bidder child :-
Laurence Mortimer 1892 Greenwich
According to my family tree notes, all three Wire-Cattley children married,
I have the spouse's names but not where/when the marriages happened but I am
not too concerned presently as I have not the time to chase down distaff
lines.......am saving that luxury until I have done all I can to make the
"all Cat*ley" database as complete as possible.
Regards
Tim

Tim. The link was broken but elsewhere I found a potted biography:
"David
Williams Wire (1801-1860) became Lord Mayor in 1858. He was a solicitor
and civic activist. He was a Common Councilman in the ward of Walbrook
from 1833 until in 1851 where he was appointed Under Sheriff for London
and Middlesex and Alderman from 1851." Elsewhere it is mentioned that he
was partially paralysed and perhaps therefore a strong supporter of
establishing a hospital in Queens Square; he died in 1860. In the National
Probate Calendar Stephen Reed Cattley is again described as Clerk so
perhaps this is short for clerk in holy orders. Checking this entry I
noticed that Travers Barton Wire was one of the two executors.
With regard to the Cattley genes, a tree on Ancestry says Cecilia had
three children, Cecil T Wire b 1864, Elsie H Wire b 1867 and Wilfred T
Wire b 1868. I am always a bit wary about these trees. Another one has
them all as children of the second marriage which would have meant
Constance gave birth as an 11 year old! Cross checking I find Cecil David
Travers Wire buried Norwood cemetery in 1900 aged 35. In 1891 he had a
wife but no children. I cannot find a widow in 1901. Wilfred Wire can be
followed in the census. He was an architect, married and certainly passed
on the Cattley genes. Anthony

Anthony,
An extract from The London Times dated 26th January 1850 see :-
www.iath.virginia.edu/exist/cocoon/london/monuments puts matters for
Stephen Reed Cattley into perspective.
This was a meeting at The Mansion House in London to formalise the Great
Exhibition of 1851.
Note that one of the two attending Undersherrif's was Wire (I think he was
made Lord Mayor for 1851) who was Travers Barton's father.
Stephen Reed Cattley is indicated as Rev'd but how on earth he got into
such illustrious company and get invited to such an important event is
quite beyond me!
