G'day Tim,
The simple answer to your question is that the George listed as the son of
Charles and Mary in the Ponders End Census Return is in fact the
illegitimate son of Hannah, whom you have correctly recorded as the daughter
of Charles and Mary. I have several primary source documents which have
George as the son of Charles and Mary and I wonder if he ever knew who his
true parents were. The christening record for George in the Anglican Church
of St Andrew, Enfield states "George, Son of Abne & Hannah Catley Enfield
Highway". The name "Abne" is struck out and the words "base son"
is
inserted to record that George was the "base son" of Hannah.
I have no idea who Abne was. The hand written record suggests that whoever
entered the information in the register made the correction part way through
the entry before completing the father's name. I think it was about to be
written as "Abner".
You might recall that I have told you of George's illegitimacy and true
relationship to Charles and Mary on a previous occasion. This information
has been overlooked in some family trees, showing descendants of Charles and
Mary, that I have seen recorded on web sites and never been corrected.
Regards,
Mick Catley
In terms of George's parents Mike makes it clearer that me.
