How do Mick,
Many years ago now, before IT and Rootsweb, was in correspondence with a
Valerie Olesen Nee Catley who had done a bit of work on her own pedigree and
had met the proverbial brick wall with her Gt gt grandfather Thomas Head
Catley who as you indicate, married Maria Head 28/08/1849 in Barkway.
At that time, I did not know enough about the James Catley of Barley tree to
realise that the Thomas Head Catley issue represented a branch which was,
and still is, unattached to the main stem.
This detachment was emphasised more recently when I was looking at the WW1
history of Edward Catley who was wounded at Gallipoli and evacuated back to
UK by hospital ship to Southampton only to die a few days later and buried
in a grave in Ilford, unmarked and unknown to The Commonwealth War Graves
Commission.
Turns out that Edward was Valerie's grandfather. Unfortunately it seems she
died in 1989 aged only 53.
The best efforts of Sharon, Elaine and Liz have so far failed to find a firm
connection which joins this branch back to the main Barley tree to which it
surely must belong.
We already know that Thomas' father was an Edward Catley/Cateley and we have
a suitable Edward candidate on the main Barley tree ( bt 19/03/1779 Barkway
son of Benjamin and Sarah nee Fielding) but can not find supportive evidence
to prove they are one and the same.

G'day Tim,
Unfortunately I have not been tracking this family and therefore I cannot
add anything to what you already have. In fact, I do not have as much
information as you have. While I have previously searched the microfilms
of
the Barkway Parish Registers, I somehow even missed the marriage of Maria
Head and Thomas Catley on 28 Aug 1849. My source for this is the LDS CD
"Vital Records Index British Isles" listed as follows:
Parish Records
CATELEY, Thomas Marriage
Wife: Maria HEAD
Marriage Date: 28 Aug 1849 Recorded in: Barkway, Hertford, England
Husband's Father: Edward CATELEY
Wife's Father: James HEAD
Source: FHL Number 1040805
The same source records the christening of Thomas Head Catley as follows:
CATLEY, Thomas Head Christening
Sex: Male
Christening Date: 15 Dec 1839 Recorded in: Layston, Hertford, England
Mother: Susan CATLEY
Source: FHL Number 1040654
Regards,
Mick Catley
