Hi Bernie and everybody,
All this sudden flurry of information from Liz and Anthony concerning
Bernies ancestor James Catley, Transported for 10 years to AU on the Bengal
Merchant in 1838 has got me looking again at various branches of my
"unaccounted Catley's" one of which, culminates with the first Catley
killed
in WW1 being Reginald Robert Catley a Gunner of the Royal Field Artillery
who died 26/09/1914 and is buried in Chester General Cemetery.
Nothing much you would think to do with a young man born sometime around
1819 who was tried at Bath assizes but I first pick up on a possible member
of this
family with a Thomas Catley of Camerton (a village about 5 miles from Bath)
who married a Lavinia Purnell in 1772.
They look to have had three sons, the eldest being Thomas b 08/04/1766 in
Camerton who married twice both at Bathwick (another district of Bath) the
second spouse being Jane Vizor or Vizer who he married in 1808.
I have six children recorded as issue from Thomas and Jane one being Thomas
b 29/06/1817 in Holloway (yet another Bath sub district) and it occurs to me
that this person could just possibly be Bernies long lost ancestor.
It is maybe a long shot but with nothing else having turned up, it may be
worth looking at unless that is, others have already been down this path and
discounted it already.
Cheers

England & Wales Criminal Records (Ancestry) show that in 1837 he had a
prior
conviction of felony but there is no record of a previous trial.
Australian
Convict Transportation Register - Other Ships (Ancestry) does not add
anything new. Convict Arrivals in NSW (Findmypast) shows he arrived on the
Bengal Merchant 21 July 1838. NSW State Record has two entries. (1)
Certificate of Freedom dated 5 January 1848 when he would have served his
10
years. (2) Ticket of Leave no date but presumably prior to C of F and
issued
for Bathurst District. These can be ordered for a fee. Anthony

Hi Bernie,
Ancestry has put some new data online Prisoners kept in Hulks. Thomas was
accused of stealing a pair of trousers and convicted 26/10/1837 in Bath. b
abt 1821. There are 3 entries. He arrived on 4/11/1837 Ship Justitia at
Woolwich transferred to Euryalas 25/11/1837 at Chatham then transferred to
Fortitude 4/12/1937 at Chatham before going to the Bengal Merchant
20/3/1838. According to records he was a laborer and could read and write,
he was also convicted previously and imprisoned it also states "he was bad
in every respect"
It just so happens that I live in Chatham. When I get five minutes I will
go
to the archive centre to see if they have any further records. As my
daughter is taking the 11 plus it will be next month.
Liz
