Janet,
Checked this out now, and have never seen so many Catlow's before, over 20
pages worth! A quick check on the IGI open list (just fill in surname and
no other boxes) suggests that the surname is much more regional than Catley,
with it centered on Lancashire but spilling out into Yorkshire and Cheshire
as well.
Be that as it may, it does not help a Catley researcher looking at
Lancashire!!!
I think that I take the view that the relatively few Catleys recorded (by
comparison) are probably unadulterated ones and not misspelt Catlows or
vice-versa for that matter. If my own searches of Catleys in Lancs show an
unusually high "failed to find return" then I will have to rethink and
possibly trawl the Catlows but will jump that hedge if, or when I come to
it.
Tim

Have you checked the Online Lancashire Parish Clerks Project? On the
search I just did they give you Catlow as well as the usual spellings of
Cattley/Catley but there are more than 10 pages of entries.
