Just to let you all know that we have had further success (that's three now) with the
CWGC in getting another member of the James Catley of Barley family tree recognised and
suitably commemorated for his service and death in WW1.
I brought Edmunds case to the attention of the CWGC because he, like many others, did not
die in action but as a result of shell shock and dementia shut away in an asylum in Surrey
and buried in the hospital grounds without any reference to him being a serving soldier.
As you will see from the accompanying e-mail, the Ministry of Defence have looked into the
case and have agreed that all the soldier patients who died at Cane Hill Asylum should
receive the recognition they justly deserve and the CWGC will advise re memorial
headstones.
My thanks to Anthony for assisting with the archive docs.
Tim

Good afternoon Mr Cattley
I am writing with reference to my email dated 12 April 2010 regarding the non
commemoration of Gunner Edmund Cattley.
You will be pleased to hear that the Ministry of Defence have now approved his
commemoration. As you aware there are a number of soldiers who died at Cane Hill. and we
are in the process of negotiating a suitable resting place for these gentlemen.
I will be in contact again when we heave heard back from our Area office responsible for
cemeteries and memorials in the United Kingdom.
We are grateful to you for bringing this gentleman to our attention and your interest in
the Commission.
Yours sincerely
Maria Choules (Miss)
