I have been working on a Catley branch in the Oldham area of Lancashire who originate from
my Lincolnshire ‘Kirton’ line.
Of these individuals I have one chap who goes missing after appearing in the UK 1911
census with his parents George William Catley & Alice Bailey.
He is George Robert CATLEY – GRO Birth Jun Qtr 1903, Oldham Reg-Dist, Lancs.
Looking outside the UK I have come across a number of records for a ‘George Robert CATLEY’
down in New Zealand.
Via the online New Zealand BMD indexes I have obtained 1 marriage reference and 1 death
reference for a ‘George Robert CATLEY’
The death entry for the George Robert CATLEY was recorded in 1982 and gives his date of
birth as 16 April 1903 which fits with the UK GRO Birth Index reference. Unfortunately
the NZ entry does not give any further information as to where he might have been born
etc.
With regard to the marriage entry, the details simply reveal that in 1923, George Robert
Catley married Mary Beatrice Zealandia Wyatt (who I have ascertained is recorded in the NZ
BMD’s as having been born on 2 Nov 1899, to George & Alice Maud Wyatt).
Mary Beatrice Zealandia Catley died in 1990 – the death entry carrying her date of birth
listed above.
Using Ancestry’s Electoral Roll data gives a run of entries for both parties.
In the 1930’s George R and Mary B Z appear together in Auckand at the same address at
which time George R was a ‘dairyman’.
However, by the 1940’s George R is now listed with a Clarice Thelma Catley in the North
Shore area of Auckland with the occupation of ‘confectioner’.
I have not been able to find details of a possible 2nd marriage because of an 80 year rule
that ensures privacy rights.
It may be that George R and Mary B Z were divorced.
Clarice Thelma Catley died in 1979, having been born 13 April 1904.
Prior to his death in 1982, the electoral roll records George R living alone at 89
Macintyre Street, Waikato, Hamilton East in 1981.
That Mary B Z was living on her own at 27 Arundel Street, Roskill, Auckland.
Has anyone knowledge of these individuals and whether there are any known issue?
