Edwin Catley with same attributes is on the 1901 census giving birthplace as Bath. Thus he
is probably the soldier found at Wellington Barracks in 1881. There is no service record
on Findmypast. He seems to be a 15 year old coal miner at MSN in 1871 (again born Bath);
son of Joshua and Frances. Anthony

Subject: [CATLEY] seeking Edwin Catley b MSN circa 1855
Good morning All,
I have hit a brick wall again and am asking for help in getting a 2nd confirmation of
Edwin's existence.
Situation :-
Am trying to identify all the Catley's in South Wales from circa 1890-1920. We already
have sight on members of both the
Emery of Midsomer Norton (Somerset) tree and those of William of Kirton (Lincolnshire) who
were employed in one way
or another in the coal mining industry thank's to Glynis and Liz who have researched
both lines between them.
However the sum of these two trees does not equal the number of Catley's in S/Wales at
that time.
More recent research has identified a branch of the Thomas Catley of Welton (MSN) tree in
the guise of Albert Henry (Harry) Catley
who married in Abergavenny in 1913 and a resultant string of descendants to current living
members but this still does not amount to
the known total.
The outstanding balance of "unknown" Catley's recorded would appear to stem
partly from one Thomas who married Mary Lewis GRO 3/4 1902 Abergavenny and there are a
number of Abergavenny births that follow, that I can not marry up.
Gwillim Thomas 4/4 1903
Charles Albert 1/4 1907
Gordon Thomas 4/4 1907
Gordon 3/4 1909
William Henry 1/4 1911
Ormond J 2/4 1912
However Thomas' later children are easy to identify which include twins in 1911, Eaton
in 1914 and Gwilym in 1918. Thomas looks to have been killed in action in WW1 1917
Loose.
Thomas appears in the 1891 census as a son of Edwin Catley :-
1891 Radstock, Somerset :- Edwin Catley age 37 a miner born Midsomer Norton. Wife, Nancy
or Fancy age 41 and children Thomas age 11 born MSN, Charles age 9, William age 7 and
Henry age 3 all born in Radstock.
Edwin seems elusive in that I can not identify him in earlier census' nor can I find a
record of his marriage. If the 1891 census is correct, he would have been born about 1855
MSN but I can not see any link with either the Thomas of Welton line nor that of
Emery's.
As for his grandchildren born in Abergavenny :- the 1911 census is unhelpful as none seem
to appear.
Has anybody done any research on this? Any assistance much appreciated.
Tim
