Hi Mick,
I was hoping for a response from Oz. Importantly the notices from Sydney Morning Herald
confirm there were just 3 siblings. The National Probate Calendar confirms their deaths
and Thomas's position at Peninsula & Orient. I think Sarah was a governess. Thomas
died a bachelor and Sarah a spinster so John George was alone in carrying forward the
Catley line.
It is useful to know John George arrived in Sydney. I had speculated that perhaps he went
to van Dieman's Land with Edmund and Philippa Bowden, his aunt and uncle, and stayed
on after Edmund died and Philippa went back. Now I shall need to locate him 1851 in the
UK. The Bowdens are, of course, the source of Amy's middle name. I have not quite
worked out the Powells but clearly Frances Mary Swindale Powell (full name in marriage
register) was sister to Philippa Bull Powell the second wife of Edmund Bowden. There was a
brother Thomas Powell whose daughter Fanny went to live with Philippa after her return to
Truro.
Do you have any thoughts about the father, John Catley, druggist and chemist? Tim would be
happiest, I think, if we could link all these Catley's to a known tree rather than
starting a new one (John Catley of St Martin in the Fields).
Best wishes,
Anthony

G'day Anthony,
John George Catley, son of John Catley and Frances Mary Swindale was born
1831, christened 12 Jan 1832 at Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster,
London, England. He married Eliza Thomasina Elliott 1858, NSW . He was an
unassisted migrant to Australia, arriving Sydney, NSW 26 Jul 1852 on the
"Tartar" from Plymouth. His children were Fanny E Catley b. 1859, NSW, d.
1879, St George District, Sydney, NSW and Amy Bowden Catley, b, 14 Nov 1869,
NSW, d, 1955.NSW.
John G Catley was a successful coal trader. He was also a leading figure in
the Congregational Church and the Temperance movement.
A death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald 25 Jan 1866 reads:
"THOMAS CATLEY, late chief officer of the P. and O. Company's steamer
Nemesis, aged 29, the only and beloved brother of Mr. J. G. Catley, of this
city."
Another death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald 23 Oct 1866 reads:
"CATLEY—July 26th, at Belle View-place, Falmouth, at the residence of her
aunt, Mrs. Edmund Bowden, Sarah Price Cately, aged 34, the only and beloved
sister of Mr. J. G. Catley, of this city."
Regards,
Mick Catley

Although no Catley is mentioned, the above extract from Australian
Dictionary of Biography does clarify the relations between Bowden, Powell
and Connolly - all names that crop up on the staff of asylums where Sarah
Price Catley and John George Catley are found (separately) in 1841.
Phillippa was the second wife of Edmund Bowden and after his death settled
back in Cornwall where Sarah Price Catley died. These connections provide
circumstantial evidence in support of John George Catley having gone to Oz.
All we need to do now is identify the origins of John Catley and we have the
makings of a tree. Anthony

Tim has sent me a list of unallocated Catleys from Central London. My eye
fell on John Catley druggist or pharmacist who married Frances Mary Swindale
Powell and had a least three children with recorded baptisms. This family
has been discussed on the list before and it surprises me they still are
regarded as unallocated (there is a possible connection to Oz). What is the
current state of play with regard to this twig (if not yet a tree)?
The previous discussion mentioned a middle name Bowden. Since then we have
details of the daughter, Sarah Price Catley, from the National Probate
Calender. She died a spinster after a life as a governess and probate was
granted to Phillippa Bowden, her aunt, of Belle-Vue-place, Falmouth,
Cornwall.
