When you do find a transcription error please take the trouble to submit a correction.
Ancestry allows only correction of first and last name and lists these as alternatives
with the error remaining as the primary entry; nonetheless the clue in the current case
came from a previous researcher who had annotated the Catley entry. On Findmypast you can
submit corrections to any field; they are checked by someone on the site, and a reply is
sent (just occasionally they choose to disagree, which is fine by me). I always go to this
site first for census returns. Anthony

I don't think that your ancestry is all gloom and doom Bernie as we have
made some good progress
in trying to identify Thomas.
The current thinking is that he is a member of the Thomas Catley of Camerton
family tree, being a grandson
bt 29/06/1817 in Holloway and the 7th child of Thomas Catley via his 2nd
wife Jane Vizor.
Have not yet had time to follow up the UK lineage but note that we have
sight of issue right
through to the late 1800's and that there are some good leads to work with.
I have not yet mastered the research skill needed to identify Catley
ancestors from census returns
where they are mis-recorded by transfer errors but fortunately we have David
and Anthony who
are very adept at being able to ferret out "missing persons".
Don't despair, am sure we will get there eventually.
Tim

Hello Tim,
Yes Tim thats what i tried for around the last 5 to 7 years with my line,
and it was more transfer errors then its worth and when you ask were or
how
they found the info you get a big nil reply . iam happy to say old Thomas
of
Bathurst line back to Bath in England may never be found iam find with
that
now it was a long shot iam just going to have to work on the one in
Australia and thats nearly at a wits ends as there only 2 alive in there
80's and they say they know nothing about the catley line so its still
happy
slow hunting - Bernie of Perth WA.

Thank you Anthony for the information which eliminates this Oatley family
from the Catley equation. Fully admit that I am having problems getting to
grips with Ancestry transcription error identification techniques.
As you are aware, my brief is to identify and map out the lineage of all
Catley's both nationally and internationally with the intention of
eventually producing an "All Cat*ley" tree identification spreadsheet
which
accounts for all bmd events recorded.
For the past three years I have been working with the research details so
kindly provided by lister members which has accumulated into a work of
15,000 + number of Cat*ley events and resulting in the formation and
identification of some 45 different trees, branches and twiglets.
Have now reached the point where I believe I have most of the main work
completed but am left with a scattering of numerous stray's which need
tidying up.
To achieve this, I joined Ancestry in the foolish notion that I could
"mop
up" these outstanding and unallocated bmd events quite easily but this has
turned out to be wishful thinking because in almost every case, instead of
a
nice clean identification, I fall foul of some kind of transfer error or
other !
