Anybody got a finger on this James, born supposedly circa 1788 in Kilmersdon?
Kilmersdon is one of the outlying villages in the Midsomer Norton area and logic would
suggest that James should therefore be a member of either the established Emery Catley of
Midsomer Norton or the Thomas Catley of Welton family trees.
I can see the historical development of an unknown branch stemming from James who looks to
have married Ann Button in Kilmersdon 02/09/1813 and produced a son, Elisha bt 16/01/1818.
Elisha appears to have married Martha Plummer 25/10/1841 at The Wesleyan Chapel MSN. I
can not see any census returns for this couple although the ' 61 version does show a
Martha Catley in MSN as a widow with five children all born Kilmersdon.
Since finding this, have consulted Phil Clements' "Somerset Coalfield
Connections" and note that he has identified Elisha from the 1851 census (which for
some strange reason I can not access) but he has no indication that Elisha is the son of
James and Ann Button (IGI) and that his "hit references" suggest that James is a
member of the Thomas of Welton tree which does not look right to me.
Anybody got anything on James which links him to one of the two main trees?
I note that there are still quite a few other MSN area based Catleys from the 1790-1820
period that are unaccounted for.
