Davids mentioning of Elias Catley's death reminds me that I think he may
well be a member of a hitherto unresearched Catley tree stemming from Yorks
and Lanc's.
Christopher Catley married 24/07/1762 Padiham, Lancs to Alice Holland. A
number of issue from this union all bapt Padiham or Altham between 1764 and
1776. There are other bapt's in Padiham between 1765 and 1778 with fathers
names given as:-
James
Thomas
Edmund
Edmund looks to have married Ann Wilkinson in 1764.
The Ellis in question may be two generations back, bapt 27/10/1709
Waddington.
Think these Lancashire Catleys may stem from Christopher Catley bapt
06/01/1632 Hillhousebanke, Leeds, Yorks and a move west into Lancashire.
A later generation could involve a John Catley who married in Colne to Agnes
Foulds in 1796 and the birth of children Robert bapt Newchurch 1797 and
Tabby also bapt Newchurch 1804. Robert looks to have been a stone mason and
possibly moved about a bit getting employment having married Ann Haughton in
1818 in Burnley and producing :- Daniel bt 1822 Burnley, Agnes bt 1823
Colne, ( ?John bt circa 1826?) Joseph bt 1828 Leeds, Sam Haughton bt 1831
Leeds, Frank Henry bt 1835 Leeds.
I am off on hols until August and not able to look at this Lancashire lot
but the above may fit into some prelim work that Kay has been doing on and
off this past year?
Cheers
Tim

CATLEY(Essex)
That is most interesting David as it compliments some information
that I
have in my bmd spreadsheet :-
Elias Catley died 16/10/1741 Indonesia, at Fort Marlborough, a sailor.
I think that the E.I.C had a pepper trading establishment and accompanying
garrison at Bengkulu in Sumatra and in 1714 they built Fort Marlborough as
further protection.
Presumably Captain Thomas Field was the master of the HEIC ship Grantham
and Elias Catley a member of his crew ?
I also have an entry that could well be Elias' birth :- Ellia Catley bapt
27/10/1709 Waddington, son of Edmund.
