I have a spreadsheet for what I call "unaccounted Herts/Cambs/Essex
Cat*leys" which geographically covers the area where the three counties meet
just S.W. of Cambridge and begins in 1613 and ends on 2009.
It encompasses 1232 bmd events but I have since resolved 669 of them into
"known trees" :-
1) James of Barley
2) Joseph of Melbourn
3) William of Sawston
4) Joseph of Royston
5) William & James of Cambridge
The remaining 563 events are thus still unaccounted.
The majority of these 563 sit squarely in James of Barley and Joseph of
Melbourn territory yet to my knowledge, few people are looking at
researching them.
Most of our Listers now hold good records concerning their own Cat*ley tree
progression over many generations and remain content with the fruits of
their researches and presumably work on the "job done" rule and for a number
of reasons, do not see the necessity of researching outside their box in the
vague hope that such work might nett in some hither to unknown lateral
branches.
Fortunately however we have four stalwart members in Liz, David, Mick and
Kay who have done, and still are doing, a great amount of selfless research
work on trees that have no association with their own genealogy but there is
an obvious limit as to what they can achieve.
Certainly as far as Liz/Mick and self are concerned, the Herts/Cambs/Essex
Catleys are an ongoing study project but at present Liz/self are looking at
the Midsomer Norton Catleys again because errors have cropped up in what was
thought to be safe research work there.
So, as far as John Catley who married Elizabeth Coulton in Shepreth in 1799
and their daughter Oprah is concerned, we do not have any further trace that
I know of, although I think it quite probable that this John was the one
bapt 03/07/1777 in Melbourn, the son of John & Elizabeth.

Yes Tim. I can see my memory recall on this has got the wrong location sorry
(I'm at work). Saying this though, has any more progress been made on
establishing what/which Catley tree they belong to ?

I think you are recalling from memory, the John Catley who married Elizabeth
Coulton in Shepreth, Cambs 17/08/1799 and their daughter Oprah bap't
02/11/1800 also in Shepreth.
There is no connection that I can see, that connects the Shepreth Catleys
with the Sawston ones unless either Mick or Liz have spotted something that
I may have missed?

From memory there is also the John and Eliz Catley who married in
Sawston
in 1799 and an Orpah, born in 1800, and died as an infant.

Hello Meegan,
Apologies for delay in response - been away on hols.
Have double checked my data for you re Elizabeth and have gone back to the
original reference work :- "Sawston Surnames" by Ronald Bircham, the one
time Vicar of Sawston.
His work can be a bit difficult to decypher and upon reflection, it is
unclear if Elizabeth died/buried on 05/04/1801 or not.
What seems certain however is that an Elizabeth was born 29/09/1800 and
bap't 05/04/1801 the daughter of John&Susan.
Bircham has the following :-
John Catley m Susanna Hinkins 17/11/1797
issue :-
Lucy bir 08/07/1798, bap't 17/07/1798, dea 17/07/1818.
Elizabeth bir 1800.
Mary bir 28/12/1804, bap't 21/04/1805, dea 29/09/1881
Thomas bir 1807
Jane dea 1811
William bir 04/04/1815, dea 25/09/1867
However, Bircham also records that a John Catley&Susan had the following
issue :-
Elizabeth bir 29/09/1800, bap't 05/04/1801
Thomas bir 06/03/1807, bap't 06/04/1807
Jane bur 07/04/1811.
I think it highly probable that Susan//Susanna are one and the same.
However, Bircham also records that there was another John Catley in the
Parish who married a Lydia (neither date or maiden name entered) who had
the following issue :-
Mary bir 20/02/1798, bap't 09/04/1798
Susan bir, 08/12/1799 (died infant)
William bir, 02/10/1803, bap't 14/05/1804
Jacob bir, 19/04/1807, bap't 24/05/1807.
Hope this helps rather than confuses!
Tim.

Subject: [CATLEY] Cambridgeshire Catleys
Hello everyone
Liz kindly introduced me to this list. I am searching for Catleys in and
around Sawston and Caxton and possibly Bourn.
My Elizabeth was possibly born in abt 1801 (from Cam FHS Online) and her
parents were John and Susan from her baptism index. Susan could be
Susannah
HINKINS.
Tim posted that he had an Elizabeth (dau of a John and Susannah) baptised
and buried in 1801 so this won't be my Elizabeth so possibly there is a
John
and Susan or John and Susannah had a second Elizabeth which is a bit
doubtful.
My Elizabeth married Richard EDWARDS in Caxton in 1824 and she died, as
far
as I can work out, in abt 1836 and Richard came to Australia as a widower
in
1857 and died here in 1888
I do hope there are some descendants of this line on the list as I am
struggling a little!!
Best wishes and thanks
Meegan
