Always pleased to help. Usually someone enlisting in 1899 would turn up in the pension
records on FindMypast but due to exceptionally long service and a bit of luck (not in the
Burnt Series) this one was on Ancestry. Anthony

Morning Anthony,
Mine was not exactly a request, more a statement of fact based on your 100% track record
of previous help given freely when Cat*ley matters - military crop up via the List.
I think your input corresponds exactly with that which David has already found in the
meantime but it is always good to get a 2nd indep't take on any research. I had
missed the Connaught Rangers bit and thought maybe David had taken a wrong turn at this
point but evidently not so, as your search confirms.
Regards
Tim

Not quite sure what is required of me but Robert William Cattley
served
for 30 years 291 days from 1 July 1899 to 17 April 1920, enlisting first
in the Liverpool Regiment and transferring in 1902 to the Connaught
Rangers. He rose to the rank of Lance Sergeant. Originally he signed up
for a short service contract and served in Bermuda, Halifax Nova Scotia
and Barbados. He was recalled from the reserve on the occasion of the
South African War and received the Queen's S.A. Medal with clasps as well
as a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (not a single entry in the
Regimental Conduct sheet in all those 30 years). He served at home during
WWI. He was born Scarborough. His Father was Thomas Catley, address
Lewisham. He married Mary Ann Watson at Scarborough 9 May 1897. They had a
son Robert born Scarborough 26 June 1899 (also found under GRO Regimental
Births). Anthony

Evening David,
I expect Anthony will probably respond as he has shown a partiality to
Catley matters :- Military.
However, in the meantime it looks to me as if your Kirton Catley tree
member
Robert William was
a Drummer in the 4th Kings Liverpool Regiment.
The Kings Liverpool is known to have served duties in Ireland prior to WW1
and the 1901 census return
seems to confirm this.
Exactly how your Thomas landed up in a Liverpool (exclusive) Regiment and
evidently returned to the Emerald Isle
following a military posting there circa 1901is a matter of curiousity.
Interesting that Thomas signed his name Cattley.

Tim
