Tim
Martha Jane and Evan Daniel are definitely the children of James and
Mary Townsend, they are mentioned on the couple's tombstone in
Chilcompton churchyard. I can provide a transcript for your records if
you like, although the inscription is rather awkward to photograph.
Unfortunately freereg has yet to transcribe the relevant baptisms.
Martha Jane is also recorded on the census as living with Mary Ann
Brimble (nee Catley 1796) after the death of her mother, so I think this
confirms them as sisters. Aubrey is recorded as a witness to the
marriage of Mary Ann to John Brimble, so that would seem to tie him in.
Robert William is presumably named after Mary Townsend's father Robert,
and his son William Aubrey would seem to confirm that he and Aubrey were
brothers. Undecided about the others, especially the one I'm really
interested in, Elisabeth!
On another matter have you ever thought that "Emery" might have been
named after the maiden name of his mother? I've never come across anyone
with this as a first name, but I can recall quite a few members of the
Emery family walking the streets of Norton when I was young.
Regards
Andrew

Morning Andrew & Liz,
I have been puzzling over the marriage of a James Catley in 1803 as
reported by both Phil Clements and Glynis Brown to be his 2nd marriage.
Phil quotes her name as Mary and Glynis as Martha.
The 1841 Census shows a James Catley age 77 living with William Carter
35 and his wife Emma 31 plus their children Josiah 7# and William 1.
There are records for a James Catley b 1764 marrying Martha Smith
24/7/1803 Radstock and resulting issue being Hannah b 1808 Emma b 1810
Samuel b 1815 and James b 1819.
Josiah# is shown as being bt 17/7/1833 the son of William Carter and
Emma Catley.
This information conflicts with Phils/Glynis' assertion that
Mary/Martha and James (his 2nd marriage) produced Charles 1805 Martha
Jane 1806 Evan Daniel 1807 and Betty 1809.
I think this leaves the way for James Catley bt 24/8/1757 son of
Thomas&Betty Kelson to have been the one who m Mary Townsend of Pilton
at Chilcompton 21/12/1795 and they sired all 11 children from Elizabeth
1795, right through to Betsey 1809. This does seem to leave a bit of a
hiccup in "the baby production dept" between Aubrey b 1802 and Charles b
1805 but this could have been a couple of miscarriages.
What do you think?
Tim

Hi Tim,
I am putting all my data onto Family tree as I had it all on paper. It's
been some time since I did it so I am rechecking it all.
James is becoming a pain in the butt as I have Another James and Ann
Gregory
marrying in 1774 Kilmersden plus later on James and Ann Bitton 1813 and
James and Ann Saunders 1828. So whilst checking my work I am putting
down
the parish they come under instead of MSN.
Bare with me.
Liz

Good evening Andrew,
It is quite obvious to me, now that I have had a deeper look into it,
that the Thomas of MSN (Welton) tree as supplied by Glynis, has errors
which have been causing confusion.
Suspect that Liz has already recognised this which is why she is asking
me to bear with her whilst she goes back to parish record level.
One error which occurs on line eight of this tree record concerns the
marriage of James Catley (born abt 1764 MSN) which is shown as to Mary
Ann Maggs who I have now found out from consultation of Phil Clements
"Somerset Coalfield Connections" that she, according to Phil, was a
widow maiden name Robbins who first married a Maggs. However she already
appears in the Emery of MSN tree as having married JamesCatley the son
of Francis Catley and Joanna Taylor.
So, we have the classic "crossover" of one individual who appears in two
parallel trees who lived on top of each other in the same locality.
If one such error exists, then it is certainly possible that there are
others and I think Liz having already recognised this, is probably
running through the two trees in unison and by generation to cross check
everything.
In the meantime whilst waiting for Liz :- can you please tell me the
date of burial of your James Catley who married Mary Townsend?
Regards
Tim
