I query the name of Charles' and Arundell's child. If based on the 1841 census the
entry reads Harr superscript t, which I interpret as Harriett, a name not unknown among
Cambridgeshire Catleys. She was aged 6 months and as this first census was taken in June
might have been born late 1840 or early 1841. Although a Y signifies born in Surrey we can
only assume Newington. She was not baptised at St Mary's Newington in the period
referred to. The marriage certificate shows Charles and father Joseph were brewers.

How do David and Mick,
It is quite possible that your Catley clan in AU could be a branch of the
Joseph Catley of Melbourn (Cambridgeshire) tree, that is if Mick is correct
in the identification of Charles being bapt in Melbourn on 15/10/1826 and
born Cambridge a year earlier on 21/10/1825.
I think the parents should be Joseph Catley (Joseph of Melbourn 1783) and
Elizabeth Burdette, Charles being their 6th out of 7 children.
Looking at Lynda's "Joseph of Melbourn" tree notes, shows that this Charles
m Arundell Penny 07/11/1840 at St Mary's, Newington (London) and that they
had a daughter, Hannah b Newington sometime in that year. Lynda has
evidently not managed to search Charles further, maybe the shipping list
shows Charles+Arundell+Hannah leaving UK in 1848 or, was Charles a widower
by this time?
My own spreadsheet notes show a Charles Catley m Charlotte McClennahan in
NSW in 1850 and the birth of a son George 18/09/1853 Coogee Bay NSW but not
when he m Euphemia Haggarty.
Maybe Liz or Kay have further information.
David :- there is a known dna connection between Joseph's Melbourn tree and
the Hertfordshire one that Mick refers to i.e "James of Barley 1709" but
also another Cambridgeshire tree " John of Sawston 1827".
I am pretty sure that Lynda has at least one other direct branch which
emigrated out to AU so maybe you are not the sole members out there.
Regards
Tim

G'day David,
I have not set out to research your Charles Catley but I have gathered
some
records while researching my family line which is designated by Tim as the
James Catley of Barley line. Your Charles, the son of Joseph and
Elizabeth
Catley, was born in Drury Lane Cambridgeshire on 21 Oct 1825 and
christened at Melbourn, Cambridgeshire 15 Oct 1826. He is listed in the
1841 census as an agricultural labourer. He arrived in Sydney, Australia
on
the ship, "Equestrian" 16 July 1848. Most of the subscribers to the
Rootsweb Cat(t)ley list believe their is a connection between the Barley
and
Cambridgeshire Catleys. Charles' wife, Charlotte McClenahan was born
Ireland 17 Mar 1826. Their is quite a lot of information on them in NSW
records.
Regards,
Mick Catley

My mother is Phyllis Larsen, who married Alan Raymond Kelly. My grandmother
was Emma Annie Agnes Catley, who married Ringwol Robeson Larsen. Her
sister
was Elizabeth Catley. Their parents were George Catley and Euphemia
Phyllis
Haggarty. George's parents were Charles Catley and Charlotte McClennahan.
Is
there someone whose has done research on this side of the Australian
Catley's, and do they know of our family?
Thanks,
David Kelly
