We are all well aware of the possibility of surname "evolution" as it is called
which is generally accepted as being due to phonetic misinterpretation by
administrators/enumerators or even parish clergy and probable illiteracy of Catley
ancestors involved who were thus unable to preserve uniformity.
All this is relevant to the UK and obvious immigrant branches out to "The
Colonies" but what do we think about near nameholders who's origins are from
other countries in Europe?
Example :- Family Search Labs data for Catlin........ numerous records in US census where
born in Russia.
Catlin sounds most "unRussian" to me as a surname yet except for English
Cattleys from Yorkshire out in the "English Community" within St Petersburg, I
do not know of any other Anglo-Russian connection.
Any ideas?
Tim
