Hi Celia,
The South African Telephone directories are split into hundreds of local
directories and there is no online Whitepages listing. I too am looking
for a name in South Africa and finding it VERY difficult. Sometimes
large libraries keep international phone books and one can search there -
but you need the patience of a saint to go through them because you might
find an area directory then find that every town and village is listed
separately.
I have found that the folks who are on the South African mailing list
(SOUTH-AFRICA-L(a)rootsweb.com ) are very helpful. You could be lucky if
your family went to Durban and stayed there because the large city
directories are relatively easy to search and they are used to people
asking for look-ups. Worth a try.
Good luck (and don't forget to let us all know if you have any
success). If you don't have any luck I can ask a cousin of mine who
lives in Kwazulu Natal to look for you next time she goes into Durban.
Cheers............. Erica

Cateley was a steward on the Olympic in 1919 and his son Leonard married my
gt. aunt Vera Harris on 17/8/1935. They lived in Bishopstoke near
Eastleigh for a few years I think before going to Durban. I believe there
was a son and a daughter. Anyone have access to S.African phone
directories? I will check if they have returned to UK.
Cheers Celia Bloor
