Andrew,
I think, that when we first made contact (ie before your appearance on this Rootsweb Listers page) I sent you Glynis' take on both the Thomas Catley of Welton/MSN tree and also her own line that stems from Emery Catley ?
Please confirm that you have a copy of the Emery tree ? If not I will send you one off list.
Just to clarify a couple of points for you :- (1) Liz has asked you if you think that your James in question could be a son of Joshua Catley who married Hannah Web. These persons appear on the Emery tree, (2) Liz also indicates that she thinks that "Emery" was possibly another son of Thomas&Amy and thus a brother to the Thomas who married Betty Kelson.
Clearly therefore, Liz is working on the theory that the Emery line is in fact an early branch of your Thomas' tree, a logical point given the geographical overlaps and the fact that Thomas and Emery could well be brothers given only 14 years difference in their age.
You ask if there are any other Catley clans in the vacinity and indeed there are, such pockets of "other Catleys" are to be found in Cucklington and Tisbury but as far as I can see, only one sported a suitable James who would be of the right age for a marriage in 1795 and he indeed did marry in that year but my records show his spouses name was Sarah but that he remarried a Mary Scammell in 1813.......all this at Tisbury.
Let us see if Liz can place the two MSN trees together and maybe confirm that your James married Mary Ann Maggs (or Clark?) first and then Mary Townsend second.
Regards
Tim

Hi Andrew and rest,
I have racked out my research on MSN. I have Aubrey the son of James and
Mary Townsend along with Elizabeth b 1795, George 1798, Joshiah b 1807, Evan
Daniel b 1807.
James I have as the son of Thomas and Betty Kelson. Thomas the son of Thomas
and Amy. Thomas the son of Thomas and Grace. I believe that Emery is the son
of Thomas and Amy and therefore brother of Thomas who married Betty. However
I do not have the proof yet. I also need to run through all my bits of paper
etc and produce a familytree on them.
Liz

Subject: Re: [CATLEY] Fw: The Catleys of Midsomer Norton
By total co-incidence, Sarah and I were having a short break in Somerset
this last few days, and spent a couple of nights in Midsomer Norton.
Before
scooting off to the delights of Bath, we did spend a few hours in the
graveyard searching, sadly in vain, for descendants of Emery Catley's
line.
I did however come across a substantial memorial plinth to the
following:
ANN CATLEY died Dec 25 1868 aged 70
AUBREY CATLEY died July 9 1874 aged 72
AMELIA CATLEY died Feb 18 1904 aged 68
AUBREY William JAMES CATLEY died Sept 18 1908 aged 76
I am fairly certain these are not of the Emery Catley tree- out of
curiosity
can anybody place them?
I have photographs of the plinth if anyone would like a copy

No! I am wrong!!
I read across the wrong line. Glynis' records show that Amelia Catley
(nee
Gait) wife of Aubrey William James Catley, died 18/2/1900 not 1904 as I
previously indicated.
This thus agrees with the GRO deaths which as Liz says, show Q1 1900
Clutton
R.D.
Apologies
Tim

Does anyone know the source of the James vs Mary Ann Maggs marriage ref?
I'll have a quick look on freereg Somerset.
I noticed from another family tree that the progeny of James and Martha
seemed to head off into Wiltshire. Are there any Catley family trees
from across the county? We're actually much closer to Wiltshire in North
East Somerset than to much of the south of the county.
Regards
Andrew

There are matching records for all four in National Burial Index
(Findmypast) but for Amelia Catley the year given is 1900. Anthony

I have discovered that James is rather a popular name. On another branch
of my family I've a triumvirate of Jameses in the 1740s, two of which
died, but I can't figure out exactly who was the last man standing!
I did indeed wonder whether Elisabeth was born out of wedlock (she
herself had both children and grandchildren out of wedlock) but on the
balance of probabilities, applying Occam's Razor, it seemed rather more
likely that she was the child of the other couple.
Unfortunately freereg for Radstock does state whether the other James
was a bachelor or widower. I also have not found a surname for the Mary
d1803, although in some published trees it is given as Maggs, in another
as Clarke.
I am not familiar with Joshua Catley m Hannah Webb 1756. Are they part
of the Emery tree?
Regards
Andrew

I have only recently started to trace my family history via the
internet, and uncovered several different family trees that began with
Thomas Catley of Welton (born 1701) and continued via a James Catley,
son of Thomas Catley (1725 -93) and Betty Kelson. On the trees that I
have seen he is credited with two wives (consecutively, not
bigamously!), both called Mary, and was supposedly buried in 1848. The
burial of a Mary Catley, wife of James Catley, is indeed recorded as
taking place in Midsomer Norton church in 1803.
So far so good, but I knew there was a grave for James Catley and
family, including another Mary Catley, in Chilcompton graveyard
(adjacent to Midsomer Norton). His death is recorded as 1831, not 1848.
The MI records his wife as being the former Mary Townsend, daughter of
Robert Townsend Esq of Pilton (Somerset). I looked up marriages in
freereg and found a record of the marriage of James Catley of
Chilcompton to Mary Townsend (otp) on 21/12/1795. As both the witnesses
were Kelsons, which was the maiden name of Thomas Catley's (1725 - 93)
wife Betty, I think that this James Catley is connected to the Thomas
Catley (1701 family tree). His Mary Catley long outlived him, as is
recorded in the census and on their gravestone. So I can only conclude
there were two James Catleys around Midsomer Norton at much the same
time and place.
As for the children of "James and Mary Catley", my ancestress Elizabath
Catley is recorded as being baptised 21/3/1795 at Midsomer Norton
before the marriage at Pilton, although I have only seen a transcript.
So I really doubt whether her father is the right James to descend from
1701 Thomas. As to her other "siblings" I wonder whether those recorded
as being baptised at Chilcompton, or after 1803, are the children of
James and the Pilton Mary, whereas the others are the children of the
alternate couple. At the moment I think that Mary Anne, Robert William,
Aubery, Charles, Martha Jane, Evan Daniel and Betty are the progeny of
the former, with Elisabeth and probably James Thomas, Francis and George
the offspring of the latter.
The other James Catley seems to have remarried Martha Smith at Radstock
(adjacent to Midsomer Norton, but on the other sides to Chilcompton) on
24/7/1803. So I believe that those trees showing the descendets of James
and Martha connecting to the tree of Thomas Catley are in error and
should be corrected.
So I was wondering whether anyone else has any records of a James Catley
in the West Country born c1764 (died aged 84 in 1848) and/or his first
wife to help resolve matters.
Regards
Andrew Hayes, grandson of Eliza Catley of Welton

Hi Andrew,
You have made some good points and to be honest there where a lot of
Thomas
and James around at the same time. With regard to Elizabeth b 1795 prior
to
the marriage of James and Mary Townsend, she could of still been there
daughter even though she was born out of wedlock. Do you have a name for
the
other Mary? It is possible that a James was born to Joshua and Hannah
Webb
who married 1756.
Let me know what you think.

Hello again Nigel
All are members of the what I call :- the Thomas of Midsomer Norton tree
(bapt Welton 1701) which seemingly has no known record trace connection to
your Emery of MSN tree circa 1731.
>From the Catley Rootsweb lister point, this line has been researched by
Glynis who of course, is an Emery tree member and very recently we have been
joined by Andrew Hayes who is a member of this Thomas tree and has just
started to research it but has already encountered problems concerning the
identity of Aubrey's mother who he believes is Mary Townsend and not Mary
Ann Maggs as Glynis asserts. Hopefully Liz can do some work on this one and
see if she can resolve things.....she is always up for a Catley research
challenge!
Do you have a copy of the Thomas of MSN tree? If not, just shout.

Looking at the photo again, the year for Amelia is weatherworn - it still looks like a one or conceivably a four, but if you blow up the magnification it is a zero.
However , where do they all fit in to the various Catley dynastic lines?

No! I am wrong!!
I read across the wrong line. Glynis' records show that Amelia Catley (nee
Gait) wife of Aubrey William James Catley, died 18/2/1900 not 1904 as I
previously indicated.
This thus agrees with the GRO deaths which as Liz says, show Q1 1900 Clutton
R.D.
Apologies

By total co-incidence, Sarah and I were having a short break in Somerset
this last few days, and spent a couple of nights in Midsomer Norton. Before
scooting off to the delights of Bath, we did spend a few hours in the
graveyard searching, sadly in vain, for descendants of Emery Catley's line.
I did however come across a substantial memorial plinth to the following:
ANN CATLEY died Dec 25 1868 aged 70
AUBREY CATLEY died July 9 1874 aged 72
AMELIA CATLEY died Feb 18 1904 aged 68
AUBREY William JAMES CATLEY died Sept 18 1908 aged 76
I am fairly certain these are not of the Emery Catley tree- out of curiosity
can anybody place them?
I have photographs of the plinth if anyone would like a copy

There are matching records for all four in National Burial Index (Findmypast) but for Amelia Catley the year given is 1900. Anthony

Hi Andrew,
You have made some good points and to be honest there where a lot of Thomas
and James around at the same time. With regard to Elizabeth b 1795 prior to
the marriage of James and Mary Townsend, she could of still been there
daughter even though she was born out of wedlock. Do you have a name for the
other Mary? It is possible that a James was born to Joshua and Hannah Webb
who married 1756.
Let me know what you think.
