John Catley of St Martin in the Fields and the Cornish connection
John Catley married Frances Mary Swindale Powell 12 January 1828 at St
Martin in the Fields. She was from a Cornish family and the fate of their
children after John and Frances died cannot be appreciated without reference
to it.
Thomas Powell and Sarah Swindale were married 8 February 1796 at St. Mary's
Truro. (It would not be difficult to trace them back at least two more

Thomas was a physician. There were four children baptized at St. Mary's

1) Thomas Powell was baptized 23 February 1797. He married Ellen Barwis 22
December 1823 at Kenwyn, Cornwell. Their daughters were baptized at St.
Mary's Truro - Sarah Ann Powell on 22 December 1824 and Fanny Powell on 5
July 1826. In 1841 Thomas was the surgeon and Ellen the matron at Sneinton
Lunatic Asylum, Nottingham. With them were their daughter Fanny and Sarah
Price Catley. Sarah Ann Powell married John Septimus Alderson 17 February
1849 at St John's Notting Hill. In 1851 at Steinton we find the widowed
Ellen with Fanny; in addition John Septimus Alderson, who was now resident
medical superintendant, and his wife Sarah Alderson née Powell. John
Septimus Alderson was a Yorkshireman and is regarded as a pioneer in the
humane care of the mentally ill.
2) Frances Mary Swindale Powell was baptized 17 July 1800. She married John
Catley (vide supra). It is probable that both had died by 1841. A John
Catley was buried at St Martin in the Fields 2 April 1837; no record yet
found for his wife. John was a druggist and chemist so very likely is the
John Elliot Catley who received his Certificate of Qualification from
Apothecaries Hall 10 July 1834 (Catley Database). Their children were Sarah
Price Catley baptized 14 May 1829 at St Martin in the Fields; John George
Catley baptized 12 January 1832 at the same church; and Thomas Catley
baptized 6 March 1836 at St George Chelsea (source Tim Cattley). Sarah Price
Catley is found as a governess at North Killingholme Lincs in 1851 and
Bromley Kent in 1861; she died 26 July 1866. John George Catley was a
warehouseman in the City of London in 1851 and then migrated to Sydney
arriving 26 July 1852; his life has been documented by Mick Catley. Thomas
Catley was a pupil at Penair House, Penzance in 1851 and a merchant clerk at
Highbury in 1861. Subsequently he resided at Southampton where he was a
Chief Officer in the Peninsular and Orient Steam Navigation Company. He died
a bachelor on 7 November 1865 (National Probate Calendar and Sydney Morning
Herald).
3) Philippa Bull Powell was baptized 11 January 1808. She married Edmund
Bowden by licence dated 13 April 1841. Edmund's first wife was Amelia
Gilbert whom he had married 2 June 1827 at St Luke's Chelsea. They had a
daughter Amelia Gilbert Powell born 16 October 1828 and baptized 3 June 1829
at St Luke's Chelsea. Edmund Bowden was a physician and Philippa a matron at
Middlesex Pauper Lunatic Asylum at Hanwell. In 1841 they were enumerated
there together with Amelia Gilbert Powell and John George Catley. ADB
relates in some detail how they went to van Dieman's Land in 1843 as
superintendant and matron of the new Female Penitentiary at Hobart. Amelia
went with them and eloped in 1847 to marry William Carter Jr. at St James's
Church Sydney. Edmund died 3 September 1847 and Philippa returned to England
in 1848. In 1851 she was in Lambeth but later went back to Cornwall and
settled in Falmouth. In 1861 and 1871 her nieces Fanny Powell and Sarah
Alderson were living with her. Sarah Price Catley died at her home 26 July
1866 (National Probate Calendar and Sydney Morning Herald). Philippa Bowden
died 26 October 1889.
4) James William Powell was baptized 5 April 1810. Nothing more is known but
he may have been resident in Falmouth at the 1841 census.

Although no Catley is mentioned, the above extract from Australian
Dictionary of Biography does clarify the relations between Bowden, Powell
and Connolly - all names that crop up on the staff of asylums where Sarah
Price Catley and John George Catley are found (separately) in 1841.
Phillippa was the second wife of Edmund Bowden and after his death settled
back in Cornwall where Sarah Price Catley died. These connections provide
circumstantial evidence in support of John George Catley having gone to Oz.
All we need to do now is identify the origins of John Catley and we have the
makings of a tree. Anthony

fell on John Catley druggist or pharmacist who married Frances Mary Swindale
Powell and had a least three children with recorded baptisms. This family
has been discussed on the list before and it surprises me they still are
regarded as unallocated (there is a possible connection to Oz). What is the
current state of play with regard to this twig (if not yet a tree)?
The previous discussion mentioned a middle name Bowden. Since then we have
details of the daughter, Sarah Price Catley, from the National Probate
Calender. She died a spinster after a life as a governess and probate was
granted to Phillippa Bowden, her aunt, of Belle-Vue-place, Falmouth,

Jocelyn and my Catleys lived at 6 Camden Row, which is now Kentish Town
Road.
They must have been approximately opposite the Worlds End Pub. And just
around a couple of corners to the St Martin in the Field's cemetery.
My daughter walked the area in Kentish Town Road and round to the St Martin
in the Fields cemetery last year to describe to me the feel of the area.

Anthony

Tim has sent me a list of unallocated Catleys from Central London. My eye
fell on John Catley druggist or pharmacist who married Frances Mary Swindale
Powell and had a least three children with recorded baptisms. This family
has been discussed on the list before and it surprises me they still are
regarded as unallocated (there is a possible connection to Oz). What is the
current state of play with regard to this twig (if not yet a tree)?
The previous discussion mentioned a middle name Bowden. Since then we have
details of the daughter, Sarah Price Catley, from the National Probate
Calender. She died a spinster after a life as a governess and probate was
granted to Phillippa Bowden, her aunt, of Belle-Vue-place, Falmouth,
Cornwall.

Hi there All,
We were away at the time this email came through and I have just looked at
it.
Anthony, the John Catley buried in St Martin of the Fields (burial ground,
Camden Town) definitively belongs to my line. He was Zachariah's father.
Born ~1775. The reason I am so sure is that when Zachariah and his family
came to NZ in 1840 they gave their address as Camden Row, Camden Town. This
is the address of this John Catley and several other members of the family
who also died around this time. I have no idea what his occupation was or
any details of him other than his death, place of burial, where he lived,
approx year of birth and his wife's name, birth year and death date.
Cheers
Jocelyn

John Catley of St Martin in the Fields and the Cornish connection
John Catley married Frances Mary Swindale Powell 12 January 1828 at St
Martin in the Fields. She was from a Cornish family and the fate of their
children after John and Frances died cannot be appreciated without reference
to it.
Thomas Powell and Sarah Swindale were married 8 February 1796 at St. Marys
Truro. (It would not be difficult to trace them back at least two more
generations.) According to the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB),
Thomas was a physician. There were four children baptized at St. Marys
Truro:
1) Thomas Powell was baptized 23 February 1797. He married Ellen Barwis 22
December 1823 at Kenwyn, Cornwell. Their daughters were baptized at St.
Marys Truro Sarah Ann Powell on 22 December 1824 and Fanny Powell on 5
July 1826. In 1841 Thomas was the surgeon and Ellen the matron at Sneinton
Lunatic Asylum, Nottingham. With them were their daughter Fanny and Sarah
Price Catley. Sarah Ann Powell married John Septimus Alderson 17 February
1849 at St Johns Notting Hill.
Edmunds first wife was Amelia
Gilbert whom he had married 2 June 1827 at St Lukes Chelsea. They had a
daughter Amelia Gilbert Powell born 16 October 1828 and baptized 3 June 1829
at St Lukes Chelsea. Edmund Bowden was a physician and Philippa a matron at
Middlesex Pauper Lunatic Asylum at Hanwell. In 1841 they were enumerated
there together with Amelia Gilbert Powell and John George Catley. ADB
relates in some detail how they went to van Diemans Land in 1843 as
superintendant and matron of the new Female Penitentiary at Hobart. Amelia
went with them and eloped in 1847 to marry William Carter Jr. at St Jamess
