Hi David/Tim
I would be very, very interested in the Newark Pedigree as I have often wondered if there is a link to the Newark CATLEY's but haven't managed to find anything so far.
You recently sent a list of CATLEY findings from the Nottinghamshire Guardian and I would like to claim the following entry as she is the daughter of William CATLEY (born 1821 in Farndon, died 1865 at Normanton, Notts). Elizabeth was the elder sister of Eliza Jane CATLEY.
~~~~~~~~~
pub. Jun 17, 1870 - Marriages:
At Salem Chapel, Stockbridge, on the 7th inst., Charles Darlton to Elizabeth, daughter of the late Mr. William Catley of Southwell (Notts).
GRO - Jun 1870 - Wortley RD, West Riding of Yorkshire
~~~~~~~~~
I also have links to another CATLEY branch but haven't managed to find any links between these two branches:
1. Eliza Jane CATLEY daughter of William CATLEY and Zilpha BELL, married Denby COGGAN in 1876 at Sheffield.
2. Denby's brother George COGGAN married Mary CATLEY in 1868 at Doncaster. Mary CATLEY (born 1841 in Owston, Lincs, died 1871 at Doncaster) was the daughter of Samuel CATLEY born Owston 1795 and Mary ROE. I believe that Samuel was the son of Henary CATLEY and Ann HOLMES who married 1783 in Owston.
So, is there a blood link between the Farndon, Notts and Owston, Lincs CATLEY's or is it a total coincidence that two brothers married girls with the same surname? :-))
Best wishes
Kay (Milner)
Ah ha,
Thought so, that the Newark Catleys are derived from Farndon, seem to recall
you/self thought this a real possibility David.
Don't think we have anybody on or off list who has indicated an interest in
the Nottinghamshire Catleys, not that I cacall anyway.
Awaiting your results with interest.
Cheers
Tim

Avril,
Just a query for you:-
Thomas son of Abraham bur 27/11/1719
and again
Thomas son of Abraham bur 27/11/1720
is this coincidental fact or a transfer error?

Subject: [CATLEY] Baptism of Elizabeth CATLEY who married in 1740 at
Laughton, Lincs: more details
Thank you, David, for your swift reply. Clearly I must learn to give more
information in a first enquiry! The entry for the marriage of Elizabeth
CATLEY (whose baptism I need) is very brief: here is the transcription. (In
transcriptions, ‘þ’ is the character ‘thorn’ pronounced ‘th’; underlining
indicates expansion of scribal abbreviation.)
Laughton 1740 Marriages
William PARKINSON & Elizabeth CATLEY October þe 13th [Laughton PRs film no.
ENG/2/522 LDS Film 0505776]
I have already studied the Laughton PRs at length on this microfim. The
Group could have my entire list of transcripts of CATLEY entries visible on
this film, if that would help anyone? The hands are clear, but several
paragraphs are faded to total illegibility on film so the list is probably
incomplete. I have some images of entries too. Let me know.
I had worked out that Elizabeth might be d/o Abraham and Elizabeth since, as
you say, her baptism c.1720 would fit into the sequence of their recorded
children (and their own deaths).
1716 Christenings Thomas Son of Abraham CATLEY April 27th
1719 Burials Thomas son of Abraham CATLEY Buried November 27
1720 Christenings Thomas son of Abraham CATLEY Baptised September 15
1720 [Burials] Thomas son of Abraham CATLEY Buried November 27th
1724 Christnings John son of Abraham CATLEY October 16th I did not find his
burial 1724-1727
1727 Christnings John son of Abraham CATLEY October 16th
1728 Burials Abraham CATLEY September 30 husband of Eliz. CATTLEY below?
1730 Burials Elizabeth CATTLEY widow march þe <between 4th and 12th>
I paid for a Lincoln RO archivist to read the illegible paragraphs under
u.v. No relevant baptism of an Elizabeth CATLEY who married in 1740 was
found, which does not rule out the possibility that you suggest, simple
omission by error.
IGI lists a number of children of ‘William and Elizabeth’ in Laughton and
Winterton (up near the Humber).

There are probably two sets of parents here but I cannot be totally sure
that the Winterton set were not in some cases twins of Laughton children,
baptised late (though if that is the case twins must run heavily in the
family!) IGI offers no marriage of William PARKINSON & Elizabeth
CATLEY/CATTLEY anywhere . . .
Does anyone have information about the Winterton set?
Possibly relevant Elizabeth CATLEY baptisms in Lincolnshire include IGI
entries:

CATTLEY Christening: 17 APR 1719 Bottesford d/o Ric (Rik on PRs) IGI says
she died the same day. I have paid for but not yet received Lincoln RO
confirmation of her death
Does anyone have evidence that any of these married William PARKINSON in
1740 at Laughton?
Avril

I see that my last message, composed in Word, appeared via Rootsweb in barely legible form owing to corruption of some characters (e.g. thorn, which appears as '???') and the inclusion of lots of code not visible in Word. Alas, I do not know how to fix that. Can anyone advise?
Also, the Rootsweb message was headed "Rootsweb bounces"--does that mean that the Group did not in fact receive it? That may be what you meant when you said, David, in your private message to me, that your messages via Rootsweb were bouncing??
Avril, baffled already . . .
Well only a bit Anthony,
If that is the case, then his parents married in 1968 but I can not see a
John V born anywhere from 1918-1950.
We have no trace to any of the West Yorkshire Catley trees that either Kay,
Liz, David or self have looked into, so it will require a bit more research.

Hi Ben,
I have been watching the progress of the TV writer Mark Catley for some
years now and have seen his name come up on numerous occasions both for
Casualty and East Enders. He is also on Facebook.
Have not attempted direct contact but rather suspect he lives in the Leeds
area but which tree he belongs to I know not.
Tim
PS he is not the "celeb Catley" that I refered to in my recent e-mails to
the List.

Did anybody watch Casualty last night and see the name on the list at the
end for Producer?
At 48 mins and 49 seconds you will see a Mark Catley Consultant Producer.
The other point to note that Casualty has been made in the Bristol area.
However it is about to cross the boarder for Wales.
As I say the bit that caught my eye was Mark Catley.
Regards
Ben

I had forgotten about the Java campaign David,
Lots of HEIC military (ex India of course) involved in this action but I
think some
5 Regiments of Foot sent out from UK, plus some Royal Artillery as well.
Was your man in the 69th Regiment? I think this was a South Lincs unit.

Tim: Could not resist looking for Charles Catley. He was of course entitled to 1914 Star, Victory and British War Medals ("Pip, Squeak and Wilfred") and they were given to his widow. He is under Naval War Medals - Officers in between a 2nd Lt and a Lt Col. I think you won your battle with CWGC but here is an additional bit of supporting evidence for his officer status. Anthony
Nigel: This is from one of three new databases on Ancestry dealing with Army and Navy medals and citations for the DSC. As the recent correspondence reflects, Ancestry does not always index them correctly so it is advisable to click on the link and inspect the original record. Ada has a page all to herself. Anthony

Good Spot Anthony- This is Ada Catley, one of my grandmother May Winifred
Catley's sisters and thus one of my Great Aunts- although sadly I never met
her (or heard of her before researching the family!).
She was born in Bombay on 10 Nov 1887, the daughter of Thomas Pratt Catley
and his second wife Edith Alice Calder, and baptised Florence Ada on 15th
Nov 1887- although later switched it to Ada Florence .
I know that she attended the Lawrence School in Ootacamund from 1904, and
that after leaving she became a nurse - I have photographs of her in nurses
uniform taken in Oct 1920 at a military camp in Basra.
On 29 Sept 1924 she married Harry Alexander Milnes in Fort St George
Madras - which is where my trail ends!
I did not know about her medal- Perhaps Anthony can direct me to where he
got his information and I will update my tree.
Many Thanks

Tim,
I would have to refer you back to Dennis re the Catley tree as my computer
had crashed weeks ago and although I now have use of it I do not have my
previous files loaded back on.
I would be interested in knowing more about the celebrity Catley though.
Thank you Tim,
Kind regards
Jann

Afternoon Jann,
Thank you for the response, you had dropped off my radar plot and was
reminded of this when I found the marriage of Agatha Brodribb Catley (a
daughter of James Thomas of Bristol and then Nelson NZ) in 1897 in Fulham,
London.
Just wondering if either you or Dennis has a copy of your tree that you
could send to me? I am working with Glynis' data, nothing wrong with it, it
is very comprehensive but just wondering if you have pushed further out
research-wise beyond that point where Glynis got to?
Apart from Agatha and my not appreciating that she had come over to the UK,
I was wondering if you had any further information concerning the children
of Thomas' grandson James Catley who married Mary Ann Maggs in 1795 in the
Midsomer Norton area? I ask because have been working with Elaine (James
Catley of Barley tree) on the tree of a celebrity Catley here in the UK
(more about that "off List" if you will make direct contact with me?) and it
looks as if said person may well be related on the female Catley side....
Elain's just waiting for birth+marriage certs to prove yes or no.
Tim

David / Anthony,
One needs to qualify what is meant by " The Napoleonic Wars 1793-1815 "
During this period the unit concerned was known as the 13th Regiment of Foot
and saw service in the Carribean at Dominica but then transfered to Ireland
followed by a spell in 1801 at Alexandria in North Africa. From here they
moved to Malta in 1802 and then to garrison Gibralta in 1803-05.
In 1808 the 13th Regiment was back in the Carribean at Bermuda and the
following year at Guadeloupe followed by being stationed in Canada 1813-15
and fighting the Americans at Lacon Mills during The American War.
As this period in British history is defined as The Napoleonic Wars and as
this Regiment spent most of its time in stategic locations to counter
Napolean's thrusts towards both North Africa and the Carribean, I can see
nothing wrong in Ancestry's classification.

Googling led me to another (Australian) site that has this as Herbert George Catley and the action at Romani on 4 August 1916. This battle was fought in Egypt. Anzac troops were involved so perhaps this is why it is on the Australian site? Anthony

One of the medals that might interest Indian Catleys is the General Service Medal with clasp "Iraq" awarded at Simla 31 July 1924 to temporary nurse Miss A F Catley of St George's Hospital Bombay.
Wikipedia states: This clasp was presented to those who satisfied one of the following conditions: Served at Ramadi or north of a line east and west through Ramadi between 10 December 1919 and 13 June 1920. Part of an establishment within Iraq between 1 July and 17 November 1920. Anthony

Good morning all,
Thomas Catley b 1701 of Midsomer Norton, Somerset is one of the three
"research established" trees that we have on file, mainly c/o the work done
by Glynis who put together both Thomas' and also the Henry of Cucklington b
1802 tree whilst researching her own line being Emery Catley b 1731 of
Midsomer Norton.
Do we have a Catley Lister who is a member of the Thomas of MSN tree ?
I thought that Jann Parks was in the frame here but have not seen any
