Hi Guys:
I have recently started posting my Emery Catley Tree on Ancestry.com and as a result I have been contacted by a lady who is trying to research her husband's great grandmother, Anna Florence Catley who was born in 1886 in Chorlton, Lancashire. I have asked her for her full email address but is there anyone who can help this lady with some answers?
Glynis
Hi Tim
Yes a difficult one. Years ago when people didnt have surnames of such you
could of had a brother who was a carpenter and another who was a plumber
hence John Carpenter and Robert Plumber!!!!!!!
Also years ago when we did have surnames it was often the case when other
family members brought up another persons child. Parents died whatever and
therefore took on the surname of the other family. Even in todays society it
has been the case when a daughter has had a child and the mother brought the
child up as her son and not her grandson. You also have adoption, so there
are many reasons why you could match up with someone with a different
surname. We know that the Herts and Cambridge lot match up but some are
closer related than others.
Hope you followed that!!!!!!!!!

Hello Liz,
Familytreedna autocontacts have now reached 1026 matches for me at : 12 Marker Genetic distance 1 which I ignore as none show a surname association.
Putting aside the exciting : 37 Marker Genetic distance 4 match, which indicates that the Edmund Catley of Bilton Ainstey tree and the Stevan Catlay of Normanton one are linked, there remains the question in my mind as to how important (or otherwise) are my 10 matches showing on the 25 Marker Genetic distance 2 ?
Puzzled but interested

Hi
John Webb was a widower when he married Elizabeth 29/8/1838. They had
daughters Elizabeth bap 24/7/1840 and Emily couldn't find a bap date for
her. On the marriage details it gives Thomas as the father a shoemaker. He
became a Cordwainer on 41 census so how hw got to be a collector of taxes
later I don't know. There is another family that move to Camerton and at
present are not connected to this tree. They are the coalminers.
Tim let me have your updated version and I will recheck info again

is the one you refer to) and an Emily Webb was born Mar Q 1844 Bath 11 3.
Maybe Liz can find one or other on the census? Anthony

living with him in 1851 and son Henry (45) in 1861. Anthony

Out interest this evening I went through every page of the 1841 census for Camerton and while there is a selection of surnames with which I am more than familiar (Padfield, Moon, Maggs, Chivers and Cottles) there is not a single Catley to be seen! Like most of the surrounding villages, Camerton's population is dependant on coal and to not find a single coal mining Catley seems more than strange. I also checked the 1881 census and there still isn't a single Catley in Camerton. Does any one want to talk conspiracy theory!!!
Funnily enough there is a predominance of names in Camerton that are families that the Catley's married into such as Moon, Purnell, Smith and Chivers. There is also is a number of families with the surname Emery which I have not come across previously which gave rise to the thought that maybe Emery Catley was name for his mother's family?
I will keep digging around in Camerton and see what else I can find.

Hi Liz,
Will be very interested to see what you come up with on this Thomas of
Camerton tree.
There look to be a number of possible siblings of Robert all attributed to
Henry & Mary Ann as the parents but some may post date 1841 + 1851 census.
It looks pretty certain that the Catley name died out on Robert's branch
(the clock maker at Chester) as all three of his male children died young.
Can not help but wonder if Thomas senior (b 1723 app) is not a chip off the
Midsomer Norton block somewhere as Camerton is quite close.

Hi Tim
I will check this tomorrow as I have Robert down for the 41 census along
with Thomas Hy, William and Mary Ann.
Thomas b abt 1723 Camerton no B in it had William b 20/4/`1778 Camerton,
George 28/4/1783 Camerton and Thomas b 8/4/1776.
George married ? and had Thomas b 1819 Middx he married Jane b hoxton and
they had Jane E b 1858 Middx.
Thomas's first marriage to Rebecca Purnell produced 2 boys both called
George 30/12/1804 died and 7/12/1806 died 9/1/1807
The tree is a bit all over the place so I will try and sort it out.

I knew you would be able to come good on this one Liz especially now as I
recall your ref's to Mary Ann Vizor previously.
OK. I see a new Catley research tree forming here, which I am going to
label :- "Thomas of Camberton".
That's Thomas b abt 1723 who m Lavinia Purnell abt 1746.
A new tree designation is justified because your input indicates that Thomas
was not a member of either of the two known MSN Catley trees (Glynis) nor
the Henry of Cucklington one either.
All this just goes to show how an almost innocent question regarding a
Catley killed in the first year of WW1 can land up just some 24 hours later
in the identification of a "new Catley tree" ?
Such is the collective power of one name Rootsweb Listers all working
together !
I have the following:-
Jane bapt 15/11/1840
Thomas
Henry bapt 17/04/1842
Charles bapt 06/06/1852
Eliza
Jane bapt 15/09/1853
all children of Henry and Mary Ann (Vizor).
Problem :- Robert b 3/4 1848 (the Chester watch maker) would look to be
another son of Henry's but I can not find any confirmation, can you?

Hi All
I had to dig deep for this one. Henry was bap 13/2/1814 son of Thomas b
8/4/1776 Camerton and his second wife Jane Vizer nee Gifford. His first wife
being Rebecca Purnell. Henry married Mary Ann Vizor b 21/4/1801. It gets a
bit confusing with this one and I will try and explain.
Hannah Gifford married Henry Pratt 6/8/1813 in Bathwick (I think he had been
married previous) he died 12/1/1819 aged 51 Bath. Hannah went on to marry
Samuel Brown 3/2/1826 Bathwick he was also married previous. Thomas Catley
was a witness to both weddings. Mary Ann Vizor was the daughter of John and
Jane Vizor they married 9/6/1800 Bath. John died 15/3/1801 one month prior
to Mary Ann being born. Looking in more detail it appears Henry married his
half sister which dosn't sound right but could be possible.
Any way Thomas b 8/4/1776 was the son of Thomas b abt 1723 and Lavina
Purnell b abt 1746. Thomas was also a widow.

Salutations to you too Anthony,
No Ancestry sub's this year either but on the bright side, Santa did bring
an all singing+dancing, bells+whistles weather station which gives me all
the met data I could wish for via Weather Display which puts it all on to my
pc.
Thought it unusual that Reginald Robert Catley was buried in his home town
of Chester. Will be interested to learn if his records contain any details
of the cause of death in Northamptonshire ; possibly a training exercise
fatality?
Reginald looks to be the fourth of seven children of Robert's who married
twice he being the eldest child of Roberts second marriage.
The Robert connection to Bristol is interesting and I note a run of possible
siblings, the product of Henry Catley + Mary Ann who married 4/4 1839
Bristol and bapt in Bristol, Temple Church.
Speculation only but could Henry be a member of the Emery of MSN tree, the
Thomas of MSN tree or maybe the Henry of Cucklington one? Also note
possible connections to Bath which might make him a part of Bernies, Thomas
of Bath tree ?
Any thoughts Glynis, have you got a Henry Catley m 4/4 1839 Bristol ?
Liz is evidently home from her Caribbean caper ...... Liz :- you did some
work on the Bristol Catleys did you not , can you identify this Henry or son
Robert b 3/4 1848 ?

Happy New Year Tim:
So Santa did not put an Ancestry subscription in the stocking this year
either!
Reginald Robert Catley was born in St. Oswald's Parish, Chester, son of
Robert and Mary Catley. All lived at 16 Hamilton Street, Hoole. There were
no brothers but three sisters: Dorothy Hannah, Constance Mary and Gertrude
Sybil.
Reg joined the Territorial Force for 4 years aged 17 on 15 May 1914. He was
in 1st Cheshire Battalion RFA. On 9 September 1914 he signed an agreement to
serve outside the UK so qualifies as among the war dead. He never got to
France, however, but was admitted to Northampton General Hospital 3 weeks
later on 25 September 1914 and died there the following day. There is
correspondence on file to show that when the family inquired about the cause
of death no information was forthcoming.
I will look for the family in the 1911 Census and check the MoP records
shortly.
Best wishes,
Anthony

Just been looking again at the list of Cat*leys killed in WW1 and focused on
the first of many to fall in that dreadful conflict, namely Reginald Robert
Catley aged just 17 of The Royal Field Artillery in September 1914.
Both the CWGC and the GRO give Chester as his place of birth (Reg Dist
anyway) and he is buried in Chester general cemetery suggesting a return
home wounded or maybe hospitalisation locally.
Ever curious, I search Rootsweb threads and find nothing about Chester
Catleys and do a quick GRO search which shows that his father could well be
Robert Catley married Chester 2/4 1896 and a small number of possible
siblings born 1899-1906.
Searching back a bit further shows another Robert Catley (grandfather?) m
4/4 1876 and three possible children of his b 1877-1884. There are three
female Catley marriages shown for 1914-1925 and three deaths 1927-1935.
What records I have, show nothing much by way of Chester / Catley events
either before 1876 or after 1935.
The only two centres of other Cat*ley activity in the area look to be Chris'
Weaveram tree and a Chester / Liverpool branch of the Normanton Cattleys but
I don't think Robert is a member of either.
Any thoughts?

Beware of line breaks introduced as this goes through the RootsWeb server! I wonder what became of Nurse Augustina? She did not marry in the UK or die there up to 2005 and it is quite within the realms of possibility that she is among the living. On the other hand, she and Nellie may have gone back to India as they do not turn up again on the Incoming Passenger lists to the UK. Anthony

Nigel: The trail does not run cold. Mr O C Catley aged 56 is listed as an outgoing passenger on Llandovery Castle departing London 16 September 1948 bound for Mombasa, Kenya. Unfortunately an Image Error on Findmypast prevents inspection of the record. He was buried at City Park Cemetery, Nairobi (just Google his name for confirmation). Date of death is 15 April 1951. Age is given as 51 which might be a transcription error. His wife (Mrs EL Catley) and daughter (Miss AS Catley, SRN) had followed on Dunnottar Castle departing London 12 November 1949 bound for Mombasa. Their address in the UK had been 209 City Road, Cardiff. Augustina's entry is struck through but so are a couple of others on the page so not sure what that signifies. Hope this helps. Anthony

Ben - you got this from me - I have the original photograph from my
grandparents album which I scanned.
Owen Calder Catley b circa 1892 belongs to the Emery Catley/ Midsomer
Norton Catleys and was the brother of my Grandmother May Catley and the son
of Thomas Pratt Catley and Edith Alice Claudine Caulder. He is therefore my
Grand Uucle!
Robert is Robert Butterfield my grandfather and the 'kiddies' included my
father Trevor. Owen worked for the Indian Telegraph and I had assumed his
the uniform was of that organisation.
I have not been able to find any marriage for Owen prior to 1916- but I know
that he subsequently married divorcee Eleanor Leah Radcliffe (nee
Butterfield) aka Nellie- who was a cousin of my grandfather-Robert
Butterfield.
Owen and Eleanor Catley had one daughter Augustina born c1926 in India - and
the family emigrated to the UK in 1947 destined for an address in Cardiff-
where my trail runs out.
Sadly I don't think he has anything to do with the other Catleys mentioned
earlier in the 'string'!
Kind Regards
Nigel Butterfield

Owen Calder Catley was a member of the Emery of Midsomer Norton tree and so
the photograph will be of interest to Glynis, Janet + Greame and of special
interest to Nigel.

Judging from Incoming and Outgoing passenger lists (5 hits) that would be
the uniform of the India Telegraph Service where he was employed as an
engineer. Full name Owen Calder Catley born around 1892. You are probably
right about the ring as on one of his trips to the UK (in 1947) he is
accompanied by wife Eleanor and (presumably) daughter Augustina, a nurse.
Hope this is enough for Tim to slot Owen Catley into the right tree. He does
not turn up in the UK census so possibly is Anglo-Indian. Anthony

I have a Photo on a Photo on the usual postcard. the picture was taken or
sent on 31st October 1916 from Bombay the Picture is of Owen Catley. He is
dressed in smart uniform but it has no badges so I do not think its a
military but possibly a Railway Uniform. The card is does have written on it
the following which may be of some use to the links below.
To Dearest May, Robert and Kiddies
With love from
Owen
31 October '16
Bombay.
Judging from the picture Owen is married as he has Ring on is Left hand on
his wedding finger.
I have no idea whom I got this photo from as like most of us you get to
collect lots of pieces of information.
I thought I would send this bit of information in just in case its what
someone needs to make things move again.
Regards
Ben

Hi Ben
I do believe it was from Nigel. We tried to figure out who Owen belonged to
and I'm not sure if Nigel has managed to find this out.

Judging from Incoming and Outgoing passenger lists (5 hits) that would be the uniform of the India Telegraph Service where he was employed as an engineer. Full name Owen Calder Catley born around 1892. You are probably right about the ring as on one of his trips to the UK (in 1947) he is accompanied by wife Eleanor and (presumably) daughter Augustina, a nurse. Hope this is enough for Tim to slot Owen Catley into the right tree. He does not turn up in the UK census so possibly is Anglo-Indian.

Regards
Ben

Hi All,
Just got back from a 2 week cruising holiday in the Carribean. I left England with snow and find that it has started again in Kent.
Anyway just to wish you all a Happy New Year and look forward to meeting up again in the summer.
Liz
Regards
Ben
