Nigel,
Thank's for asking and the answer is both yes and no!
No because you have not specifically sent me the India connection family
history : but yes, because I have extracted it from the e-mail traffic and
added it to my database.
My data system works! It took me less than 30 seconds to check that I had
your India stuff included. Everything is on one big data sheet in year
order and each main Cat*ley Tree has its own colour code. The Emery of MSN
line is in a particularly vile lime green which stands out beautifully!
A quick scroll up found George Jesse Catley bir 17/06/1846 Camptee, India, a
son of Leonard Catley and Charlotte Bunyan and that Leonard was bapt
26/03/1820 MSN, the son of Thomas Catley and Hester Tovey.
When I have done all I can do, will send results out for double checking.

G'day Sharon,
The Barkway Parish Register has James baptised 7 Nov 1740. I do not know his
age at the time but his sister, Sarah was baptised 14 Oct 1738 and died 17
Oct 1738. Their parents, Charles Catley and Mary Newman were married 30 Jul
1738. My guess is James was only an infant when baptised and therefore maybe
only about 24 when he married Martha Gray 27 May 1765.
Tom Doig also told me that James was alive at Barkway 1764 (re Militia
List). He was not listed as "Married with children" however he could have
been married as "married with children" indicated "more than three
children". James disappeared from the the List after 1764.
The Barkway Parish Register does not have a record of James marriage in that
period. However there is a marriage of Edward Catley and Grace Gray 27 Dec
1733. Grace was buried 22 Feb 1736. Edward is James' uncle. The spelling
of "Gray" with an "a" might indicate that she was related to Martha Gray.
I hope this does not confuse the issue.
Regards,
Mick Catley
Hi Mick
Hmmmm!! Well at least it's something that he was still there in Barkway in
1764. Maybe they got his age wrong or he wasn't sure how old he was when he
got married in 1765 as he is shown as 27. There was sometimes a gap between
years of birth and baptisms and maybe they concentrated on getting Sarah
baptised because she was so ill - I don't know, it's all supposition isn't
it!!!
Is there any other reason for anyone marrying by Licence though apart from
them being widowed? That's what I'm confused about. I also suspect that
James came down to Dorset/Wiltshire with another relative as I have a whole
branch of Catley/Cadley's from the area that I can't fit in (as yet!).
What do you think?
Best wishes,
Sharon

Hi All
I have a query! I was looking again at my Wiltshire Parish Records this
evening and I wondered about the marriage entry that I have for James and
Martha. They married 27 May 1765 in Tisbury, Wiltshire and Martha is given
as age 21 and is shown as living in the parish. James, on the other hand,
seems to have come down from Hertfordshire and gone to live in Lulworth,
Dorset, as that is his parish at the time of marriage. He is aged 27. Here's
my query! There are no details given as to condition at time of marriage,
but they are shown as marrying by Licence rather than by Banns. Given the
fact that he's also aged 27, this would seem to be late to be marrying for a
first time, perhaps, in those days - what does anyone else think? I can't
think that they needed to get married quickly for the imminent birth of a
child for instance, as their first child arrived in 1766 as far as I am
aware. Could there be another explanation as to why they didn't marry by
Banns?
Thanks!
Sharon
I was searching the FIBIS site tonight and found a very new entry, namely:
The Times of India "Deaths as reported in 'Domestic Occurrences' in
the Times of India 1883 Editions "
Surname Catley
Given name(s) Leonard
Place Mazagon
Year 1883
month Dec
day 12
Register Entry Dec 12th at the residence of hos son Mazagon
Leonard Catley of Bath and late of Egutpoora aged 63 years and 10 months
Edition Year 1883
Edition Date 17 Dec
Mazagon was one of the original islands of Bombay and Egutpoora is
probably Igatpuri.
The death date is very specific and if subtracted from the death date
gives a birth date of Feb 1820 which lines up perfectly with the
christening date (as per the Catley database) of 26 Mar 1820. Also
he was born at (near) Bath, so I think this would be for Leonard son
of Thomas and Hester.
I will see if our state library can get me a copy of the microfilm
for the paper on inter library loan and see if it has any more information.
Graeme Simpson
Hello Nigel,
I'm fine thank you, with summer over and beautiful autumn days
abounding - if we just had some more rain!
Thank you for your information on the Lawrence School. I do have some
of it from you already, but thought I would post on India-L to see
what I could find out from there. I was advised that the only thing
that survived that includes the 1860s is the Admission Record, but no
Catleys are included in it for the period 1854 to 1880 - probably
because they refer to the admission as boarders and the Catley
children would have lived with Leonard and Charlotte so not included
there? This would not have been the case in 1904 onwards when your
grandmother and her sister attended Lawrence School.
I don't know if any of the Somerset researchers have captured copies
of Laura and Albert's birth records but I will do that anyway this
week and make all the information available to the group.
Regards
Graeme

Hi Everyone,
Perhaps one year I will be able to join you all in a Catley reunion, but
nevertheless please pass on my best wishes to all at the Trout when you meet
:)
It would be wonderful to be there!

Hi everybody,
Just as a reminder, I am working on a "which Cat*ley Tree database" which is designed to identify individuals into their respective tree groups.
So far I have taken the trees I know about which totals 19 and then added the GRO bmd's as well and at the same time, have added Chris' database into the mix. Also the whole of the Yorkshire county Parish Records are loaded for good measure.
My objectives for doing this are threefold:-
1) Tree identification
2) To hi-light which persons are as yet unaccounted for by tree placement.
3) As an aid to future dna tests.
Am currently running at 5200 individual entries but am nowhere near the end!
Can I appeal to all of you who are sitting on information 100 years+ age to let me have it?
Any "strings" of tree data would be most welcome as would anything from County Archive level.
Tim

Subject: [INDIA] CATLEY and Lawrence Asylum Ooty 1860s
I have just obtained details of the birth of two of my wife's
ancestors (Albert Edward CATLEY b 22 Jun 1864 and Laura Violet CATLEY
b 15 Nov 1865) and their fathers trade/occupation on the baptism
certificates for both children was "Quarter Masters Sergeant at the
Lawrence Asylum" at Ootacumund. They were both baptized by J
Whitehouse (Principal of the Lawrence Asylum for Albert's bap on 24
July 1864, and Officiating Minister for Violets bap on 24 Dec 1865).
I was wondering if anyone had any information on this school,
especially if any records survive that might list staff and their
period of service, and any pupils records which might list the CATLEY
children if they attended this school (The parents were Leonard and
Charlotte CATLEY and they had 13 children between 1844 and 1867).
Any information would be much appreciated.

Hi Mick
Just to let you know that I decided to double check with Hertfordshire HALS)
Record Office today in case I had missed anything with the marriage record
of James Catline and Alice Jackson. However, they checked the actual entry
for me and confirmed that only the date is given along with the names of the
bride and groom. There are no parish residencies given but as the records
either side of them show where those couples lived, the assumption is that
both James and Alice lived in Therfield at the time. Alice Jackson was
christened in Therfield in 1685 and there seems to be an established Jackson
family there. I did discover another marriage though and this was in
Wyddial(very close to Therfield) of John Catlyn of Buckland to Mary Parker
on 10 Feb 1729.
I still would like to have a closer look at the registers for all three
parishes - I didn't want to push my luck with HALS as they were SO helpful
and checked removal/settlement orders for that time as well AND phoned me
back to confirm everything.
Hope it helps a bit more!! I can STILL see another visit coming up - but
it's such a lovely area that it's not too much of a hardship and the Cattley
relatives we met there last year were very helpful and welcoming.
I've discovered another possible lead on the Wiltshire line as well, but
this has meant that I need to go to Dorchester Record Office (at least
that's not too far), Hampshire Record Office - a bit further - and Wiltshire
Record Office which has moved and is a nightmare to get to! Keeps me busy I
suppose!
Best wishes,
Sharon

G'day Sharon,
Thank you for clarifying the information you have about the marriage record
for James Catline and Alice Jackson. I agree it would be useful to see if
the parish registers have any other information about their families in the
period before and after their marriage. If I get the opportunity I might be
able to get the LDS films of the registers before your summer to save you
the trouble of another visit to the Records Office. I will keep you
informed of any developments.
Regards,
Mick Catley
