Hello all,
I should know the answer to this question but am going to ask it anyway:-
Which Lister(s) have a Thomas Newmarsh Catley on their Tree? (Kay? John? I think it is you?)
I ask because I have just chased up a Cattley ref on Google concerning the Easterbrook family where an Edith Cattley is shown as marrying one William Walter Easterbrook in 1902.
My own records show that an Edith Cattley did marry in this year in Croydon Reg District but I had no information as to "which tree"?
The web page holder has responded with Ediths Wedding Certificate showing that the marriage took place on 22/6/1902 at Croydon Reg Office.
Ediths father is shown as Thomas Newmarsh Cattley and that the family address was 7. Burgoyne Rd, South Norwood, Surrey. Thomas' Profession is shown as "Dentists Assistant" but that at the date of his daughters marriage, his entry is shown as (deceased) .
The witness for Edith is shown as Elizabeth Cattley which is apparantly Thomas' second wife and thus Ediths Stepmother. Ediths natural mother is listed by the Easterbrook family researcher as Charlotte nee Gibson.
Easterbrook notes show that the Cattley spelling does not tie up with the 1881 Census which gives the Catley single T entry.
Yet another example of how some families decided to add another T to the name, reasons unknown.
If the researchers of Thomas Newmarsh want either a copy of this Marriage Cert or the Easterbrook email address, just ask.

Timcatt

I know I am in the 'step' camp, but it would be interesting to have them and
their forbears on my tree.

Hi Nigel, David, Leeann and Glynis plus All,
Nigel has just sent me a copy of the marriage cert for Leonard Catley and
Charlotte Pratt nee Bunyan. It states Leonard was aged 24 when he married
22/2/1844 Madras India. It gives his father as Thomas Catley. So I would say
that Leonard is the missing one from the marriage of Thomas Catley and
Hester Tovey baptized 26/3/1820.
I will leave you all to work out your relationship as it could be half and
step!!!!! depending on which marriage of Charlottes you come from.
It is possible that Charlotte married at the age of 14 to Thomas Pratt as it
was I believe the age of 12 onwards you could marry providing you had the
consent of your parents until you became of age at 21 when you didn't need
to bother.

David - Great minds think alike
I went to British Library yesterday , really to pick up a preordered
document and see how things worked in the India section. However I was
able to find two or three gems.
Firstly collected pre ordered burial registration forEdith Alice
Claudine Catley Thomas Pratt Catleys second wife and my great
grandmother -buried 3 Aug 1932 in Silchar - although this did not tell
anything we had not already picked up .
I then located on microfiche the 22 nd February marriage registration
for Leonard Catley and the widow Charlotte Pratt nee Bunyan (father John
Bunyan). Leonard is described as a 24 year old private in HM 4th
Regiment at Secundabad Charlotte as a 16 year old 'Indo Britain' (which
the Librarian confirmed as Anglo Indian). So two years earlier when she
married Thomas Pratt she must have been 14!!! I took a copy of the
microfiche image which I will send you - although quality may not be
great .
Lastly i followed up with the reference Liz gave me for the train crash
story. I was presented with a thick musty old handwritten ledger- but
found the extract and copied it down by hand -and reproduce below a
typed up version. I have no doubt that 'Catley' in this case is our man
Thomas Pratt Catley. The 1885 Baptism record of his daughter Maud
records him as an Engine Driver for the GIP railway, confirming earlier
descriptions of him as a railway employee. However in later documents-eg
May's baptism he is in the army.
The extract is as follows
"Catley’s Case
Catley was the driver of a train on the GIP Railway on Mar 8 /85 and
while the train was under his charge a collision occurred by which one
man lost his life.
Catley was charged with the offence of endangering life by disregard of
one of the railway’s rules. He was tried by the DI Commissioner of
Narringspue [?] – W.J. Tawney a covenanted civilian of more than 20
years standing.
On 18 th April , Catley was convicted and sentenced to one month’s
simple imprisonment. In his judgement Mr Tawney said the accused was
guilty of disregarding the danger signal and causing the accident. It
was a very serious offence of its sort, though it involved no moral
guilt. He understood Catley was a steady and cautious man who had
served the Company well for many years and who he hoped the Company
would see their way to employ again. The interest of the public would
not be protected by a mere fine.
The sentence was duly carried out and Catley on being released from
prison was reemployed by the Railway Company but in an inferior
position not as an engine driver but as a workshopper.
The high Court of its own motion, and not on the suggestion of the
Government or of the Railway Company, sent for the records of the
proceedings in order to satisfy themselves of the propriety of the
offence and on Aug 5/85 after hearing council on behalf of Catley
enhanced the sentence passing sentence of six months rigorous
imprisonment of which the month already served was to count as one.
Thereupon Catley was rearrested and put back to jail, more than two
months after his discharge on the expiry of his original term of
imprisonment.
Memorials [?] by Catley and others on his behalf were perused to the
Government of Bombay
On Aug 25/85 the Government signed a resolution declining to interfere
except as far as to change the sentence to one of simple imprisonment on
the grounds of good character. The resolution says nothing as to the
question of discretion in reopening the proceedings but expresses the
opinion that a sentence of six months rigorous imprisonment was not in
itself excessive for the offence for which Catley was found guilty."

Hi Nigel,
http://books.google.com/
or - Just go to the normal google page, and type in 'google books' as the
search field...
then type into the search field the name you are searching. It's worth
persisting through
quite a few of the pages that the search turns up.
Not all the books are fully scanned and thus searchable, but
those that are, you can search for different names. Others just have
snippets from the
book, and others have no pages at all displayed.

Ref the first entry from your Google Books research:-
This is a typical example as to how we can never trust the single/double T
spelling in Cat*ley to be accurate and I quote from the Cattley Probate

Hi Liz - Now I am back home I have started following up on the clues you
have left me.
Re your e-mail below -
I found the army marriage list entry for Leonard Catley (as you note
below) - but have also found matching entry for Charlotte Pratt -same
page ref etc.
I also matched Maud Catleys marriage record in 1902 with an identical
entry for a George Walker Mann. You will recall I asked you whether you
had come accross Dorothy Everett Mann who is mentioned in my
grandfather's will as being his wife (May Winifred Catley)'s niece - she
was therefore Maud's daughter.

Hi all
As discussed, I am getting ready to set up a database of Cattley images.
Several people have already offered photographs (a special thanks to Erica,
Bernie and Anne) and I have some here too.
If anyone has any photographs (or other interesting Cat*ley images) which
they would like to add to this image library, please email them to me and
I'll get started.
Don't worry about image size. I will sort that out at this end.
