For those of you connected to the Stevan Catlay of Normanton Tree:-
Just to let you know that I have had contact from a Jane in California who is related to Thomas Ward of Hull who married our Mary Dorothy Cattley 1808-1891 in 1829.
She tells me that she has managed to obtain a photo of MDC ex RD @ L/U which I find interesting, obviously therefore there was much more connection than I realised, between Hull Shipping and the Russian Baltic Trade connections than previously suggested? How else would RD have MDC et al in his archive?
Erica/Joan any comments please?
Happy to contact RD unless you have info already that answers question?
Tim C.

Dear Roy/Kay/Erica,
Many thanks for your collective replies re Crockfords etc. Silly me for not
thinking about it myself. This comes from not being "tuned to matters of
Religion".
Roy:- I think this is the first contact we have had, I envy you living in
Cornwall, we do an annual holiday to Mevagissey or Gorran depending if in
self catering or camping, latterly it has been the Mevagissey cottage because
I am getting too old to appreciate damp socks and tents anymore!
Nearly had a fit re your e-mail address as I almost read it as Cattley7
which is the name of my fathers Austin 7 special two seater sports car which
he built circa 1957 and is known to be owned by a person living in Cornwall.
Best wishes Tim Cattley

Hi Tim,
I was going to leave the RAF records of Basil MacCormack Catley and Frederick Norman Colin Catley until a later date. I am still trying to concentrate on Zaccheaus. I am waiting on some more certificates and as I understand it there is a back log with the PRO. I am hoping to go to Wales for a couple of days in the school half term so I can do some more research on the Catley's that went there from Lambeth. I am also going to plan a trip up to the MLA maybe in Easter school holidays to do some research on Zaccheaus. Just gathering in all the info I have to go on.
I would be very interested to know how much it cost's for a researcher to look into the RAF records.
I am still waiting on reply's for the Catley BMD but if you want I can send you the info I have already.
Talk soon
Liz
Hi Tim,
One thing that is not in short supply in genealogy is clerical
directories....
if you look up the website of your society of genealogists, I will be very
surprised
if there isn't a substantial list of them. Or maybe even any local large
library??

Liz,
You asked me about RAF research and I responded in detail but no comment
from you in return.
Maybe you were put off by "next of kin" references?
Most of that which you seek is not available (to my knowledge) via the
Internet and requires either written application to the Ministry of Defence
Archives or personal research either at Kew or the RAF Museum at Hendon.
If MOD Archives, you will have to do alone but as for Kew/Hendon, I can
recommend a specialist researcher who has been extremely useful to me in my
own searches to the point where I have my own 4th cousin Alfred Cattleys
full RAF history mapped out to each and every Operational sortie he
undertook from 1940 until his death "On Ops" in April 1941.
I know his exact history, where he was recruited, where he trained, where he
was awarded his "wings" ie gained his RAF licence to fly aircraft.
I know where he was posted on Ops, which Squadron that was, who trained him
on such tasks as night instrument flying and even the serial number of the
Wellington aircraft (W5653) that he flew. I can tell you all the names of
the rest of his crew, where they came from in civil life and like Alfred, I
know where they are buried.
I also know the exact sequence of this Sqns operational missions including
the one that he was killed on.
From this knowledge, I have managed to locate his aircraft's crash site on
top of a small mountain in County Donegal in Ireland and have a few bits of
metalwork from it.
By using archive information, I have even been able to identify the EXACT
part of his aircraft that I recovered from the crash site ( a bomb bay bomb
beam gusset plate!) and I even know the serial numbers of the Bristol
Pegasus engines that powered his plane.
I have crash reports from both the RAF search teams and also the Irish Army
Crash Investigation Branch and also a photograph from the Irish Free Press
showing my cousins coffin, draped over with the Union Jack being handed over
at the Irish/Ulster Border with full Military Honours from the Irish Army to
an RAF Military Detail. Six pall bearers.
As you can deduce, there is much information to be gained from current
archive for WW2.
However, just be aware that records for the WW1 conflict have suffered
"weeds" between the 1920's and 1940's plus WW2 bomb damage and are thus not
nearly so exact.
Could WW2 Records suffer the same "weeding" of info in the future? I hope
not but one never knows, so it is best to get started asap just in case.
Regards Tim

There are a large number of marriage notices in the first volume of
Gainsborough Workhouse Minutes, transcribed by Pat Pomeroy. As the
majority appear to have taken place at Non-Conformist churches and
Register Offices, they may be useful. These notices are not of course
proof that the marriage took place. I will give all the information that I
have on each marriage. The dates are those of the meetings of the Board of
Guardians at which the marriage notices were given, NOT the date of
marriage. G'bro = Gainsborough
