To the best of my knowledge Edward Cuthbert ( b1874) married Jessie Hanbury
in 1893 and had two daughters Alice (b1895) and Dorothy (B1897). Edward
Percy (b 1862), while not my tree, I believe d1927 but Dennis may have more
on him.

By way of example, in the north Lincolnshire parishes of Belton and Bottesford
respectively, the name appears in the p'sh reg's in runs as follows:
1579-1748
Cattley
Catley
Catlay
Cattlay
Catlay
Catley
1713-1781
Cattley
Catley
Cattelah
Catley
Catlea
Catley
It must be a case of phonetic spelling giving rise to these variations which
doesn't surprise me one bit - the Lincolnshire dialect produces some strange
pronunciations such as Azzle-bee for the village of Aslackby (15 miles south of
Catley Priory).
With regard to the 'latin' form quoted for 'Catthley' in Catley Abbey, might the
'h' have been a misread 'e' ......I noted the following:
'The thirteenth century seal of the priory is a pointed oval, and represents the
Virgin, with a crown, seated on a throne, the Child on the left knee; on a base
under an arch, the prior kneeling in prayer to the right. The legend is -
PRIORTUS . DE . CATTELE'
Finally I've appended Lay Subsidy lists for two Lincolnshire villages taken in
1334.
Hemswell is in the north of the county and falls within an area associated with
a good distribution of Catley's from the 1500's onwards. I've high-lighted one
'William cat' ... a distant kinsman? Note his byname did not merit
capitalization.
Perhaps more promising is the entry for the 'Thomas Catleye' at Quarrington (or
Millthorpe) - Quarrington was some 8 miles to the south of Catley Abbey.
However, Quarrington and the surrounding area does not figure in the known
Catley settlement patterns of the post 1500's in Lincolnshire. If he and his kin
survived the Black Death where did later surviving generations move to I wonder?

I note that the Oxford Dictionary relates the place name of Catley to the
location in Worcestershire and adds the interpretation of Wild Cat Wood to
it.
If this is right, then it seems more appropriate to me than the Lincolnshire
Fens in terms of woodland habitat and thus plausibility re the wild cat
connection.
I do not buy the "Catholic" derivation for the origins of the name if Catley
is indeed Old English as we are lead to understand because "old english" not
only pre dates Norman Conquest but probably Christianity in the British
Isles as well.
Likewise I think that any connection with Coeur as in for example in Coeur
de Lion ( lion heart) is a probable bit of true wishful thinking as coeur is
a French masculine noun and obviously French came to Britain with the
Normans and post dates old english. Not only that but heart is not the only
translation for coeur by any means: for example 'mon coeur' can translate
as my love. 'Tant que le coeur me battra' means to the last drop of my blood
whereas 'tenir au coeur' means to stick in ones throat!
Some may suggest that Catley is more modern, being a direct latter English
hybred relating to bovines such as Cat(t)le-lea (lea being meadow) or
maybe Cat(t)le-lee (lee being sheltered) but if true abviously goes against
the old english language origin theory.
This is why I propose that we need to make contact with learned persons who
are proficient in "Old English" language to confirm the name roots and
origins.

Maybe we should bear in mind that history is often written to change, obscure
and distort the facts, not preserve them. This could include surname
etymologies.
And that 1300-1800 were times when members of forbidden organisations or sects
might have to hide, or lie low.
I am thinking about huge social disruptions like the murder of the one million
("heretical") Cathars in the 14th century in southwest France over 13 years
(the Albigensian massacre); the cruel and deadly catholic European
Inquisition;
the suppression of the Templars; the suppression of the Jesuits; the many
pogroms and persecutions of various Jewish populations; etc.
What I am thinking is that if big names got banished or hunted by the
authorities of the time, others innocent but of the same name might have found
it wise to change names, or pretend the name was derived from something
harmless.
Just the same way as it wasn't smart to have a Jewish name in 1930s Germany.
Just the same way former Nazi SS officers and other covert Nazis hiding in
various countries, having escaped down the Vatican-St John "rat-lines" from
Genoa or southern Spain, found it entirely sensible to lose the German name or
pretend it really had an English background.
Consider, for example, if the name Catley did derive from "Catholic", how
Catleys would feel after King Henry 8 decreed that Catholics were not to exist
in England any more.
Catleys might well decide that the name Catley ACTUALLY came from "cat-lea" or
"wild cat wood" and start passing the idea around.
Just a thought.

Hi Tim,
Perhaps I should have copied the whole cert. out. This is what the 1st part said.
The English surname Catley is of toponymic origin, being drived from the place where the original bearer lived or held land. In the instance, the surname Catley is derived from the place name Catley, the name of places in Hereford and Worchester, Lincolnshire and Greater Manchester, or Catlow located in Lancashire. Thus the surname Catley signifies one from Catley or Catlow. These place names Catley are derived from the old English meaning Wildcat Wood. Taking one's surname from one's place of residence was quite common in medieval England. This surname was passed down to succeeding generations in the same or varient forms. Varients of the surname Catley include Cattley Catly Catlowe Catlin Catling Cattering and Chatterly.
The question is what is a Wild Cat Wood? Could this be as it suggests a wooded area where Cats lived before they became pets!!
Or perhaps we should be thinking how did a place get its name.
Talk soon
Liz
Hello Liz and All,
I still think that it would be an interesting exercise to attempt to
discover why it is that so many sources (example as you provide Liz) all
assert that Catley is a place name and that it means Wild Cat Wood.
What evidence do the pundits have to come to this conclusion?
I am not questioning whether it is right or wrong but why?

Hi All,
My dad presented me with a family name history cert today. Apart from talking about the name Catley and how it came into being it also states the following.
References to the name Catley or to its variants are found in English documents that date back to the fourteenth century. Adam de Catlowe and Robert de Catlowe both of Marsden were recorded in the Lay Subsidy Rolls of Lancashire in 1332. John Catlow of Handbridge was recorded in the Wills of Chester in 1642. Mary Catlin appeared in judicial court records in Essex as the wife of Nathaniel of Ovington and was reported bound for Barbados in July 1674. James Catling was recorded in London and was reported aboard the Douglas bound for America in 1760. Charles Chatterly of Middlesex sailed to the New World on the Scarsdale in July 1770. The Cattley or Catley family was listed among the English nobility. Richard Catly and his wife departed Dublin aboard the James Fagan bound for the port of New York in April 1848. All these names are derived from the place names of Catley which meant Wildcat wood.

Liz
We are told that in "Old English" the name Catley, being a place name, means
Wild Cat Wood and it has often bothered me as to what is meant exactly by
this statement. What is Old English? Does it mean pre Norman, yes obviously
but does it include Angle, Jute and Saxon and all the other tongues from
tribes that invaded these shores well before either the French or for that
matter the Norse?
Or, does Old English refer to the language of the original Celtic tribes
that populated the whole of the British Isles before all those nasty hoards
crossed the North Sea from modern Denmark etc.
So is Catley a Celtic name or not? Speculative perhaps but worthy of
investigation and clarification I would have thought.
To add to the pool of speculation, be aware if you will, that in The Bishops
Transcripts for the Gilbertine Order, Catley Monastry out in the Fens of
Lincolnshire were naturally written in Latin, the spelling in the 11th
Centuary was Catthley. Was this a Romano translation of a Celtic word or
maybe a Saxon or Angle one?
So who is it who has defined Catley as Wild Cat Wood and again who has
decided to modernise the Celtic name O'Gathlaoich into Catley?
We need help here from learned Professors of Early English Language, Any
ideas? I did raise this point some two years ago now on this site but no
one responded.
