Hi Micheal
Could you tell me more of your tree please?
It seems we have common ancestors in Thomas married to Betty Kelson. From
their marriage my paternal line followed several James to James and Martha
of Chilcompton, Somerset.
Hoping to hear more from you ,
Dennis Catley

Hi Kay,
Just to refresh, those two Catley girls you went to school
with(both now decreased) were my cousins.
Our line goes back to James of Midsomer Norton 1700's, I have found one or
two Thomas's but not Thomas, son of Thomas. Our most common fore-name seems
to be James.

This turned up from my Personal mailing list - don't know if it adds

Bernie/Kay,
I don't know that I have what you're after, but I have several Thomas
Catley's in my family tree from the Midsomer Norton area of Somerset. Thomas
and Grace, had child Thomas (1701) married Amy, had child Thomas (1725)
married Betty Kelson, child James (1757) and child Martha (1755). My dates
are too early for your search, but they might be a start.
The Catley's are on my maternal side and the work to trace them back to
Thomas was carried out in the 70's.

Hi Bernie
Thank you for your email, I haven't seen any Catley's from the Norton
Somerset area in my family tree yet. I've noticed however that there do seem
to be a lot of Thomas Catley's around.
I've also noticed that the same names: Thomas, Elizabeth, Jane & Ann seem to
keep cropping up within the families I've seen, it makes me suspect that
they must be related somewhere in the past.
Good luck with your search, if I spot Thomas then I'll let you know.
Best regards

Hello David,
Your confirmation information re Williams death as 1865 in Southwell noted.
Southwell is very close to Newark and I recall a number of Catleys listed
there. Is there a connection family-wise between these two settlements?

KayM

Kay have you found any Catley from Norton somerset shire Bath area , still
looking for Thomas catley 1790 and he had are son Thomas born 1818-20 and
sent here to australia in 1837
Bernie Catley in Perth..
Hi Mick
I was so eager to share the information from my certificates that I didn't
check the dates on my computer properly. Thank you for letting me know.
The date on the birth certificate has been copied by myself correctly, the
mistake could be with the information regarding the baptism. I haven't
actually seen the parish records myself, the data was sent to me by a kind
person who looked it up:
North Muskham Baptism PR's
Page 3 ~ #.17:
1848 March 6 : Eliza Jane : William & Zilpah : CATLEY : Moor house :
Labourer
I wonder if the baptism date should be April the 6th? I'm going to try and
get to the Nottingham archives when I have some spare time, but when that
will be I don't know :-))
When I've managed to see the records myself I'll let you know.
Thank you again
Best regards
KayM

G'day Kay,
There seems to be an error in the dates for the birth and baptism of
Eliza Jane Catley with the latter event preceding her birth date. Is
this a transcription error?
Regards,
Mick Catley
I've been really busy sorting my whole family tree out, but have a little
bit of information to add to the CATLEY list about the branch that moved
from Nottinghamshire and ended up in Sheffield. I've received GRO
certificates for Eliza Jane CATLEY and fortunately they verify all the
information I'd found on census records, the mormon site and parish records
in Sheffield.
Best regards
Kay M

Hi Catley Listers
Just came across a BDM index reference to a CATELEY marriage in London .
The ref is Edward Cateley March Quarter 1845 Shoreditch 2 / 349 . Does this
belong to anybody?
Mindful of the awful state of the indexes I wondered if it might really be a
Cattley or Cattley on the original certificate.
Does any one have free or easy access to the images.
Just thought it might interest the London and Esex Listers. Best regards
from France
Dave Barker
I suspect that we are all connected way back, not such a big call if you
consider the small population of England, say back in 11, 12, 13thC
...but I'm having enough trouble just connecting all the dots in Yorkshire
(or any dots in Yorkshire).
Making the Lincs - Yorkshire connection is something that the DNA test would
do, it
would help us establish connections, but then we would still have to do the
legwork to find out how they all fitted together.
David - I know there are several Catley branches in NZ - but I was at the
same school as two sisters called Catley (not related to me, because as
Lyn
says, our family didn't arrive in NZ until 1906), have you traced your NZ
lot
down to the present day??

thanks for the info Kay and it all seems to fit together via Bilton with
probably Edmund 2 m Ellen as Johns parents and Edmund 1 m Ann as
grandparents.
Nice one!
Will let Marge know that there is a lead but that we will possibly be able
to confirm more at a later date.
Cheers Tim
ps I have got my first Catley Abby mineral water bottle and looking for more
to send on to those listers who wanted me to try to find one for them too.

dear tim,
I found something which just adds to this family a bit, ...
In the email below under 'Parents'..I wasn't sure which John
Catley was the father...however
I found these three on a census somewhere, (and of course, haven't
made a note of where!!)
John Catley, born Bilton Ainsty around 1797/8
Catherine born in Leeds about 1803/4,
and a son George, in 1842, born Seacroft.
Thus, Tim, on the Coveney list under 'bilton-in Ainsty' - the John
born 1798 is, I believe, the one who married Catherine Dawson
in 1823. And of course, this would be Marge's line.

Hello David,
Welcome to your son! The more Catleys here in New Zealand, the better in
my view! Great.
I can't assume that your early migrant connection from Lincolnshire has a
connection to my branch, which arrived here from Yorkshire in 1906, but Kay
Heath in Sydney who has done all the work would know more of this than I and
will possibly comment.
Regards,

Not my branch Mick, but utterly fascinating stuff. Thanks for sending it
out.
I think the northern hemisphere Catleys/Cattleys will understand that, in
Australia, being descended from one of the early settlers transported from
England as a "convict" is now considered fashionable and, indeed, a mark of
high distinction as a family. It seems that everyone with some background
in Australia hopes to find one in their past.
I think they attach it to the idea that they are the true Australians who
have been there a long time.
Speaking as a mere New Zealander who eyes these things from across 1200
miles of Tasman Sea, I also link a possible transportee background to some
of the remarkable Aussie qualities.
These include, in my view, self-reliance, robust sense of humour, speaking
out, having a bit of "go" in you, not being one of the exploiters but
understanding the position of the ground-down and exploited western peoples,
respecting the poor and struggling (Aussies speak of these people as "little
Aussie battlers" and people who "live on Struggle Street", where in other
countries people might be contemptuous of the poor), lateral thinking,
taking a wider view, being innovative and entrepreneurial, and so on.
Regards,
Lyn Milnes (nee Catley) in New Zealand

Peter,
Many thanks for info on Sarah.
Note that Celia has given you a lead for searching the South African
connections (Hill) and hope that somthing comes out of this for you.
Note from my own files that I had written contact in 1987 with UK members of
this Cattley Tree who at that time lived in Beverley (North Humberside)
Lichfield (Staffordshire) and Reading (Berkshire) and also obtained from
them photostat copies of entries from the Family Register plus records of
B/M/D's.
Do you have same? If not, could photostat on to you if required.
Sincerely Tim

I have been researching John Catley, who received a life sentence on
2 Sep 1829 at Chester Session of Pleas for forging bills. He was
transported to the Colony of New South Wales on the ship,"Lady
Harewood" which arrived Port Jackson on 4 March 1831.
The Lady Harewood indent (probably prepared in 1830 at the time of
departure from England) recorded his native place as Lancashire, age
28 years and married with one male child.
The General Muster of Male and Female Convicts in the Colony of New
South Wales and Norfolk Island on 31 Dec 1837 records him as age 31,
assigned to L. Mcalister, Goulburn District. He was one of 452
convicts assigned to Mcalister.
I could not find him in records of pardons and tickets of leave
1810-1875. The only other information was his name in an index to
convicts in the Colonial Secretary's Correspondence with the
annotation, "died June 1851". In the same index there is a reference
to Ann Catley annotated "London (UK)". Both these entries bear the
same reference numbers so I assume the correspondence with Ann Catley
is an advice to John Catley's wife that he had died.
Can anyone establish a link to John Catley?
Regards,
Mick Catley
