Dear Tim,
Thomas CATTLEY who went to Penn, USA
(even though he gives his birthplace as Seacroft in the
1881 census on the IGI he and his siblings are listed as
born in Whitkirk, which is just down the road - maybe a couple
of miles) .
(Garforth, where he later moved with his family to presumably
get workin the coal mines, is about 4 miles from where he was born ).
Parents:
John Catley of ? m Catherine Dawson (of Thorner? b. 1804?)
at St Peters Church in Leeds (which was the Parish Church
of Leeds) 1823. Thorner is about 3 miles from Seacroft.
Siblings: also born in Whitkirk/Seacroft, were Mary (earliest of this
group in 1827) - later Harriet; Edwin; seems strange that there
were no babies from the wedding in 1823 to 1827, unless they died,
or maybe were living in another area in that time.
Catherine (mother) looks as if she was still alive and living (on her own)
in Seacroft in 1881.
All we need to find out now, is which John Catley she married?
also whether or not the Bridlington Catleys (Dave Barker is interested
in them I think) who had two generations of family around the late
1700's early 1800's called 'John Dawson Catley' - were perhaps
related to Catherine. Bridlington is on the coast, on the far side of
York from Leeds ,although only about 50 miles away.
kayh
p.s. I was wrong when I thought some time ago, it should have been
'Scarcroft' which is a village near Thorner..when I saw Catherine in 1881
living in Seacroft, I had another look at the map.
Hi Dave
I've just read your email with great interest. I'm wondering if the
following entries could be one's I'm looking for:
NTT, Southwell, Southwell Minster
+:1865 Sep 03 : CATLEY William : 44yr : [Cork Hill, Souuthwell]
NTT, North Muskham
M:1845 Dec 16 : CATLEY William = Zilpah BELL
I have the following Census information and your information would tie in
with it.
1851 resident in North Muskham
William CATLEY Head M 30 b Fardon, Notts Agricultural Labourer
Zilpha CATLEY Wife M 33 b Balderton, Notts Wife
Elizabeth CATLEY Daur 5 b Fiskerton, Notts
Jane CATLEY Daur 3 b Muskham, Notts
Thomas CATLEY Son 1 b Muskham, Notts
1861 resident at Church Street, Southwell
William CATLEY Head M 41 b Fardon, Notts Agricultural Labourer
Sarah CATLEY Wife M 42 b Balderton, Notts
Jane CATLEY Daur 13 b Muskham, Notts Scholar
Tom CATLEY Son 11 b Muskham, Notts Scholar
Ann CATLEY Daur 9 b Muskham, Notts Scholar
I think I may have found them living in Sheffield in the 1871 census
Sarah CATLEY Head Widow 54 b Balderton, Notts
Jane CATLEY Daur 24 b Muskham, Notts Dressmaker
Tom CATLEY Son 21 b Muskham, Notts Seaman
The person I'm looking for is:
Eliza Jane CATLEY who married Denby COGGAN in Sheffield in Q1 1846
Eliza Jane COGGAN who died in Sheffield aged 52 in Q2 1901.
According to the 1881-1901 census her DOB ranges between 1848-1852. On the
1881 census she is named Eliza Jane but on the 1891 & 1901 she is named
Jane.
My big question is: when she was born and living with her mum and dad was
she Elizabeth or Jane?
Best wishes
Kay-M
Hello all,
I have just started looking at Liz C's Catley BMD's (I now have full copies of both Cattley and Catley BMD's by the way) and remembering that someone mentioned Catleys in Newark, Nottinghamshire, a few weeks ago, I thought I would do a quick check out.
If any of you run through these BMD's you will see that Newark seems to stick out like a light all on its own, rather like the Somerset and South Wales Catley references.
The period covers some 65 years and in that time there were some 54 Catley births registered, or 54/65ths if you like.
Newark Town is not exactly large today let alone the period 1838 to 1903 which is the time in question and so I assume that for registration purposes it must have encompassed a pretty large rural area as well?
Also in the same period there were only 8 Catley male marriages recorded (also 8 female) but from the "spread of male Catley marriages" across the years concerned, it shows how Catley families could have formed there.
If anyone has any input info for Newark above and beyond just BMD's I would be interested to hear of it.
Regards Tim C.
Hello Liz,
Sorry for not getting back to you yet but in addition to christmas and the new year I have had to attend four funerals. Suddenly I realise that I am not imortal!
I will get cracking as soon as possible but there will also be a house move within the next month and the dragon insists that I start packing. As Tim and Kay will confirm she is gigantic and MUST be obeyed.
I have just come accross a program called Birthwrite which, at the click of a mouse, produces Web pages. Has anyone come across it? I am tempted to get a domain name to publish my tree and possibly contact other Cat(t)leys.
Any comment and suggestions would be welcomed.
God bless
John one C

Thanks for your email Tim... I'll try and follow in the footsteps of Kay
who is streets ahead of me and I'll keep a look out for your Normanton
lot.

Hello Liz M
Sorry about the delay in responding to your query but as you know Kay H
managed to put some information back your way before I had even opened
your
e-mail! (ever efficient our Kay) and as she has made a study of the East
Yorkshire Cat*ley records in chasing up her own roots, her information
is
far greater than mine and thus more able to assist than I.
On a personal note, I am pleased to know that you too are looking at
West
Yorkshire Cat*leys as well as Kay because my ancestors originate from
not
far away in Normanton and for many years now I have been "stuck" in 1590
with no seeming hope of getting back further and have been hoping that
others may come along on research and make connections.

Hi All,
Just a nice reminder to all those who are participating in the BMD for Catley's exercise. I am still waiting to hear from some of you about your entries. I know it was Xmas etc. and I don't want to appear pushy but!!! Kay and every one I sent the list's to this year are excluded. It's very difficult to get all the info together I know but I'm hoping that when I do get it I can send it to Tim who might be able to link some families together as we know that both spellings are still found in the late 1800's and they belong to the same family. Thank you to all those who have already sent the info.
If you need time please let me know I'm not hassling you.
Regards
Liz
Hi Tim,
We all wish we could be as lucky as you - to be 'stuck in 1590'.. most of
us are stuck around 1800 - give or take 50 years!!!.
kayh
p.s. I have had another look at the Lincolnshire parish marriage list
which I bought from their FHS, and can find NO Catleys/ Kateleys/Cattleys/
whatever other combination I can think of. Which really surprises me (as a
devotee
of the Catley Priory theory). However, I am still happy to look up other
Lincs
names for anyone. Which reminds me, I have seen a 'Catley' written down as
"Oatley". Just to make our lives a little more difficult.
p.p.s. Celia - did you ever find the Fanny Bloor (best friend of my
husband's grandmother???) circa early 1900's?? I know you put out a query
to your Bloor people, it's just that I have a photo which might be of
interest
to a relative.

Hello Celia,
You may be correct in your thoughts but please be aware that there are many
references where the name Catley (as in a known Tree) has been recorded
differently on numerous occasions in the distant past. So much of it is
probably down to the fact that in the early days of Parish Records etc, it
was down to the Priest/Vicar/Scribe or whoever actually wrote the records to
make an informed phonetic interpretation of the spoken name in question and
with most of the parishioners being illiterate, they could hardly question
spellings.
Thus in my own case, the earliest ancestor on record is shown as Catlay
which probably befits the Yorkshire dialect quite well, yet one hundred
years later in the 1700's there is a Parish record where a later ancestor
who was educated has crossed out the Vicars Catley entry and has put "the
name has been spelled Cattley before this" .
So maybe it would still be best to keep an open mind on spelling origin?

Hi Liz M,
When I went through (some of) the Garforth PR's - there wasn't
an awful lot of Catley's, and I haven't found the record of
your Alice's birth to confirm it. But I am keeping an eye out for
it.

That's interesting Liz C, there is stuff there I didn't have..
I will add to my tree records. Thanks.
Catley/s moved to Garforth - ..as there were obviously
coal mining jobs to be had there.
Using Tim's list - and what I have - this is how I think (!) Enoch's line in
Garforth, went back..
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Enoch.....
son of:
James Catley (b. 1794)
& Elizabeth Tomlinson/Thomlinson m 24 August 1817
son of:
Thomas Catley (b. 1769)
& Ann Fletcher m 22 April 1794
son of:
Thomas Catley (b. 3 Feb 1733)
& Ann Crawford m Jan 1764
(It was their son William, who
married Mary Cawood of Barton in Elmet /Barwick in 1802 - Tim's list)
(NB NOTE FOR LIZ MORAN
(It was their daughter, Alice who married a Samuel
Robinson, 1806 - see IGI)
NB (There were two 'Thomas & Anns' having babies at the same time
in Garforth PR's which makes it hard to be sure of siblings, but usually the
PR put
'Thomas Snr' or 'Thomas Jnr' )
son of:-
Robert Catley (b )
& Mary Shillits m 28 October 1711
& Ann Dib m 1731
(NB. NOTE FOR LIZ MORAN..
Robert & Ann had a daughter Ann who (!!) married Samuel Robinson
1763 - see IGI - unless it's a mistake in the IGI)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
In terms of accuracy, it's the best I can do at this point.. I have lots of
siblings
for everyone, but I
have just put this tree in terms of the parents, for this exercise.

I think it would be Mary Shillito in 1711 it is quite a common name.
On a personal note, I have lurked and read your correspondence for some time
now but I think my Cateleys (Kateleys) probably are a different lot
altogether.
Cheers Celia
