Yes I think you are Patty,
Shall we call John of Shabden in the portrait suave and dapper, maybe a hint
of receding dark hair, certainly not barrel chested and I will bet he was a
"smooth man" as well.
Dont forget you are referring to your own Gt Grandfather X5's grand nephew
so do please be careful what you say Patty!

Hi there,
As the law of averages goes I suspect your statement about 25% of us are
not the children of our (presumed) fathers, runs in families so some
children is some families will not be the offspring of their presumed
father, while all children of some families will indeed be the offspring of
there presumed father...

Yes.
Zacariah who drowned, came with wife Sarah to Nz on the 'Bolton' arriving
Wellington April 1840
With them were in order of birth, their children - Sarah, John (my Gt
Grandfather) Clara Rebecca, George Phillip (who up til a few weeks ago I
thought had drowned. But
another distant cousin contacted me with the right document showing that he
died of a 'decline'
There was another child born in England, Louisa Elizabeth, but she died,
don't know when but she did not arrive in NZ and was not on the shipping
list.
They had another Daughter before Zacariah drowned - Anne Louisa b 15 October
1841 and died 30 June 1841.
Poor Sarah.
Your right Tim,

Blue eyed...brown or blonde haired...
I may be mistaken...

Just another recall to mind.
An elderly aunt of mine Lilian Catley born NZ approximately 1900 had told my
mother Bertha Mary Catley that the Catleys came from Yorkshire originally.
I found this information on a scribbled note in amongst a lot of my papers.
There was no contact with Catleys in England after 1842, so this is a family
clue.
When I started to look at my Catleys about 15 years ago all I had to go on
was 'Zacariah drowned in the Hutt River, NZ in 1842 and his wife went mad'
Those two facts proved to be quite true, even though his drowning was not
the cause of her depression as she was committed to an asylum with 'pre
senile melancholia' at the age of 65 in 1875 not at the age of 31-32 after
Zacariah died, when her children were still young.
So am still hoping for a 'popup' answer
Anne
Disagree,
You are all looking at the eyes and chin where things do look similar but
the mouth, nose and ears are quite different.

Hi Liz,
Agree with you totally about male family names being repeated through the
generations.
Having spent years on my own Tree where it is all Stephens,Thomas',Richards
and Roberts etc, the next Tree I looked at was the Ansty one and straight
away it was obvious that here was a different "clan" with Eli's, Elijah's,
Calebs and Isaac's predominating.
Have had a second look through the Ansty line for you thinking that Zacc in
all its forms is perhaps closer to to it than most others that I have
information on but I can not see any.
However, both Mick Catley and Candis Sanders are the Ansty Line specialists
and I am sure that if I have overlooked anything by way of a name
connection, that they will chirp up and let you know.

Hi Christine
Re likenesses. My mother, Bertha Mary Catley born 1911 NZ, is a
descendant of Zacariah Catley, born 7 September,
1808 in London. She is so like John Catley of Shabden it's quite spooky,
although no connection with him is proved
Have you had a look at Ericah's site? and the portrait.
Are yours anything like that to look at?
Regards - Anne, who is always trying to grab at straws
How can you be so sure that your ancestors could read and check the entries
had one or two ts? I thought the spelling was always fluid until everyone
could read.
Celia Bloor
Hang on a minute Christine,
Lets get things into perspective here can we?
You recently indicated that you thought you were on to a mutual cousin
connection between two Richard Catleys yours and an other belonging to FJC
(John Catley) that you alluded to. Yes I am with you there because John
certainly does have a Richard Catley of Lincolnshire confirmed on his tree.
OK, with you so far but now you suddenly switch to Cattley and not Catley as
you recorded before. FJC's line is confirmed as Catley so now you enter a
different ball park in two ways because not only have you altered the
spelling but you have bounced from the mid 1700's to refering to a person
who emigrated to Aussie in 1926!!!
Can you please clarify things for us because we are not with you, if the
person is a Cattley then it narrows things down quite a lot. I nearly had a
fit when I started reading your email because there is an Anna Maria Frances
Cattley on my own tree and it was not until I saw the 1926 reference that I
realised that you were obviously on about quite some other person because
"my Anna Maria" was born in 1783!
Please "go again" on your information?
Cheers Tim

OK Erica,
To put you out of your misery! FJC refers to Frederick John Catley who
calls himself John who lives in the County of Shropshire, as do I.
Can not recall how we two first made contact but it was before I went PC. He
knows quite a lot about the Catley (Catthley) Gilbertine monastery up in
Lincs and was the first person to tell me that at one time in the 18th cent
there was a small water bottling plant near the monastic ruins selling
Catley Mineral Water. I have a photostat somewhere of their advert.
Anyway FJC's roots are in Lincs but I was not shure that he had picked up on
the net e-mails concerning all the recent interest in the Lincolnshire
records.
From Christines response we now know that he/she have had contact, so all is
well.
He has also acknowledged the references to me but indicates that he is off
to Switzerland on hols so will not be able to answer any queries for a week
or two.
If any others wish to have his e-mail contact I will send it privately but
although I now know he monitors the CATLEY-L@rootsweb net I also know that
he has not gone public on it (yet) so it is not for me to put his AD out on
general release.

Hi Everyone,
Finally got my computer back, now I'm trying to catch up and get it back in
order.
Have just found this site, which is a real gem for searching those straying
ancestors of ours :
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/
It's growing constantly, is searchable though it produces geographical
names too - bit of a bind if you are searching HILLS <g> - but with time
and patience a potentially marvellous source of information.
Cheers .... Erica
